This fair is a bit smaller this year than in previous editions, with 31 galleries participating, down from 36 last year. Chief creative officer Rodman Primack explains that it was time to “refresh the fair” in order to “create a different kind of pacing and movement throughout the space.”The new layout has perhaps encouraged a few extreme booth designs, such as London-based Louisa Guinness Gallery’s replica of a jeweler’s studio and New York ceramics specialist Jason Jacques’s two-story exhibition booth. “His program is really special,” says Primack of Jacques. “Not a lot of people are working in this area of early 20th-century ceramics and even sometimes late 19th-century ceramics in a way that feels contemporary and not old-fashioned.”Participating for the first time this year is Mercado Moderno (MeMo) of Rio de Janeiro, presenting a solo exhibition of designer Hugo França, who works only with reclaimed wood. Growing from a smaller presentation in the Curio section into a full booth this year is Future Perfect, from New York, with an exhibition of work in sand, stone, glass, ceramic, and metal by designers including Maarten De Ceulaer, Katherine Gray, Kristin Victoria Barron, Lindsey Adelman, Lex Pott, and Steven Haulenbeek.Design Miami 2016, November 30-December 4.
