Jaquet-Droz clocks from the Palace Museum in the Forbidden City are on display at the “Treasures of Time” exhibition at the Hong Kong Science Museum until April 10.Last year Jaquet-Droz celebrated its 280th anniversary and the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer founded by Pierre Jaquet-Droz continues to showcase its watchmaking expertise in exhibitions. The latest exhibition from the company focuses on Jaquet-Droz clocks and automatons which are part of the private collections in Palace Museum of the Forbidden City.Billing the exhibition as an “exceedingly rare” event Jaquet-Droz states that usually such precious works are never allowed beyond the walls of the Palace Museum. The London Science Museum has collaborated with the Palace Museum in setting up the exhibition which includes Jaquet-Droz creations that once were an important part in the Qing dynasty’s imperial collections. The 18th century Imperial Court in China saw clocks and automatons created by the company being employed as part of daily life, and Emperor Qianlong translating the name «Jaquet Droz» into its Mandarin Chinese equivalent.Since 1774, Jaquet-Droz has built on its ties with Canton and the Imperial Court of China and as a result the company’s products were imported into the Forbidden City. Pieces on display in the exhibition demonstrate a naturalist aesthetic and “the art of astonishment” that the company is famous for employing in the creation of clocks and pocket watches. Singing bird cages and automatons from Jaquet-Droz were also among the objects that enchanted the Emperors of the Qing dynasty, who collected a variety of them.“The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Treasures of Time” is on view through April 10, 2019 at the Hong Kong Science Museum, Science Museum Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. For more details, visit: https://hk.science.museum/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.comFounder: Louise Blouin Read more
