“The Voice of Things,” which questions the way objects are perceived, is currently being shown at the Demisch Danant gallery in New York. The group exhibition that features works by renowned designers and artists, such as Cesar, Jacques Dumond, Sheila Hicks, and Pierre Guariche, among others, is on view through February 23, 2019.The title of the exhibition is borrowed from French writer Francis Ponge, and his book of poetry “Le parti pris des choses.” Ponge was known for minutely examining everyday objects. He believed, “[Things] resonate all at once in a concert without monotony, and not without a certain delicacy.” Resonating Ponge’s words, “The Voice of Things” seeks to question what evokes an onlooker’s reaction or response toward an object.Trying to understand how a viewer perceives different objects, the exhibition examines how different “scenes” or “works” provoke or inform the viewer when presented in different contexts, settings, and within different groupings. The finishes, the material, and the palette also play a large role in influencing a viewer’s response towards an object. For instance, as described by the gallery in its press note, “A salon-style installation presents Cesar’s works on paper, collected over time. Together, one can glimpse Cesar’s intention or process developed over time; however, on their own, the works portray a different story.”The exhibition deliberately groups works of artists from different genres and eras to see how the ensembling of objects influence viewers’ perspective of them. As stated by Demisch Danant, “’In The Voice of Things,’ a Sheila Hicks Moroccan tapestry (1978) is paired with an early Navajo rug (1920); a Pierre Guariche daybed (1955) sits next to a Jacques Dumond Game Table (1948). Objects of a collection can co-exist together in random ensembles or calculated patterns; the placement is a delicate balance.”The Demisch Danant gallery, founded in 2005 by Suzanne Demisch and Stephane Danant, specializes in 20th-century French design, with an emphasis on the late 1950s through the 1970s.“The Voice of Things” is on view through February 23, 2019, at Demisch Danant, 30 W 12th St, New York, NY 10011. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
