Design Miami kicks off today with thirty-four exhibitions accompanied by eleven Curio presentations representing venues from twelve countries. The major trends in this year’s edition include the use of industrial materials and processes; a sense of playfulness and whimsy; a focus on craft; modular designs; immersive installations; and Latin American design.“This year’s gallery presentations showcase the best in collectible design from rare mid-century pieces to contemporary works using experimental materials and processes,” says Jennifer Roberts, Chief Executive Officer, Design Miami.In Contemporary Debuts and Commissions, Marcin Rusak debuts his Perma Collection — a series of furniture made from discarded flowers bound in resin — at Sarah Myerscough Gallery. Kasmin presents never-before-exhibited furniture by Mattia Bonetti that recalls 17th century European architecture and sculpture, surrealist visions of early twentieth-century painting, while employing cutting-edge methods such as 3-D printing and robotics. Friedman Benda brings a sculptural stool and bench made of solid sandstone by Najla El Zein. Katie Stout’s infamous “girls” furniture “Triple Girl Floor Lamp,” along with a five-thousand-pound marble tub by the Haas Brothers are being presented by R & Company.In Reinventing Industrial Materials and Processes, Cristina Grajales Gallery features Sang Hoon Kim’s foam furniture series comprising colored sofas, chaises, chairs, and tables. Functional Art Gallery brings the works of Theophile Blandet, who uses primitive tools to break, chop, burn, and melt a variety of industrial plastics to create furniture that seems to exist in another era. Michael Young’s “MY Collection” — made of hollow stainless-steel extrusions capped at each end with white enamel — is presented by Gallery ALL. Illustrative aluminum works from Chris Wolston are on view at The Future Perfect’s booth.The Playful and Whimsical Design theme is highlighted in Nacho Carbonell’s handcrafted, organically shaped, semi-transparent cocoons on view at the Carpenters Workshop Gallery. Moderne Gallery brings Daniel Jackson’s life-sized Rocking Unicorn, a playful take on the traditional rocking horse, which was gifted to fashion designer Wayne Rogers by his wife as a Christmas gift in 1974. Hostler Burrows presents new hybrid animal ceramic works by Jasmin Anoschkin created from stoneware with a 24k gold glaze.The galleries have created immersive environments to showcase their design collections. According to the press release, Friedman Benda has turned their booth into a Japanese rock garden, incorporating natural and industrial materials to showcase work by gt2P, Joris Laarman, Florian Idenburg (SO—IL), Faye Toogood, and more. Christina Grajales Gallery presents works in an environment dominated by the color pink.
