Dutko Gallery, Saint-Louis Island, presents “Complement d’objet direct” through January 12, 2019. The exhibition creates an encounter between two different worlds of design and photography by juxtaposing Eric Schmitt’s design of furniture pieces and Philippe Gronon’s frontal photography in nine installations.Eric Schmitt plays with materials like wood, marble, alabaster, and bronze, blending them in a unique mix to create voluptuous and organic-shaped furniture. The colors range from light and lunar shades to dense and dark ones. Philippe Gronon takes frontal photographs of different kinds of objects, such as elevator doors or space rocket engines. These are presented in life-size prints, which can reach as much as 2.60 meters. Through the use of the photographic chamber and life-size prints, he leads the spectators to reflect on the materiality of the objects depicted and he goes back to the origins of photography, according to the gallery. The Dutko Gallery draws formal, material and metaphorical connections, sparking a dialogue between the three-dimensional pieces of Eric Schmitt and the two-dimensional works of Philippe Gronon. “The whole space of the gallery is punctuated by interior design furniture, industrial elements and versos of paintings from famous artists. A blend of the unknown and the everyday life, which permeates a sensible aesthetic through nine ‘discussions’ staged for the occasion,” states the gallery. The gallery sets off a dialogue between the works of Schmitt and Gronon in relation to the size, the shape, the color, and the spirit of the pieces. “The picturality of the photographs echoes the structure of the furniture; the photographs add another dimension to the furniture exhibited and conversely the furniture adds another level of interpretation to the pieces of furniture, each one thus becoming the direct object of the other one. Characterized by an acute attention to detail, the two artists answer one another with humor and astuteness, and lead us in the discovery of an authentic causality between design and photography; for instance by matching the bronze and nickel Saturne Table from Eric Schmitt with the photograph of the Ariane IV Viking engine by Philippe Gronon,” explains the gallery in a press release. The exhibition is on view through January 12, 2019, at 4, Rue de Bretonvilliers, Paris 4thFor more information, visit: https://www.dutko.com/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
