Ian Ritchie Architects has designed two new performance spaces within the Regent’s Park conservation area for the Royal Academy of Music. The Academy recently unveiled the new and transformed spaces including the Susie Sainsbury Theatre, a new Recital Hall on rooftop, five new percussion studios, jazz room, audiovisual control room, and 14 refurbished practice and dressing rooms.“The spaces are stunningly beautiful and inspiring. They will raise the bar and challenge the students and staff in every possible form of music to reach higher and search further,” said Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, Principal, Royal Academy of Music. The curved shapes of string instruments inspire the Susie Sainsbury Theatre’s design. Designed for both opera and musical theater productions, the 309-seat cherry-lined Theater has been acoustically refined by Arup Acoustics to deliver excellent sound qualities, according to Ian Ritchie Architects.“The lighting deconstructs the traditional chandelier into an exploding theater-wide galaxy of light through 600 fibre-optic crystals. Within the old concrete walls, the Theater incorporates 40 percent more seating through the addition of a balcony, as well as a larger orchestra pit, a stage wing, and a fly tower,” Ian Ritchie Architects adds. The 100-seat Recital Hall sits above the Theater. It is acoustically isolated from all other buildings. The Recital Hall’s new glazed lobby, with access from the main stairway dating from 1911 and also by a glazed lift, creates a visual and physical link between the old and new buildings.Ian Ritchie Architects proposed to build an entirely new theater within the space of the old one. “The project was unusually complex due to the constrained site into which the myriad of functions of a modern opera and musical theater were to be introduced.”Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the new spaces. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
