13 months after Las Vegas shooting, Trump finally approves bump stock ban

In October 2017, shortly after it was revealed that Las Vegas right-wing white domestic terrorist Stephen Paddock used a bump stock adapter when he murdered 58 people at an outdoor festival, Republicans quickly offered their thoughts and prayers. Many people wondered whether or not the Republican Party, beholden to the NRA, would even make the almost meaningless gesture of banning bump stocks. Bump stocks are used to allow semi-automatic firearms to act more like fully-automatic machine gun-style firearms. On Tuesday, the Trump administration finally announced that  it was banning the use of bump stocks. Those who possess the devices, which make it easier to fire rounds from a semi-automatic weapon by harnessing the gun's recoil to «bump» the trigger faster, will have 90 days to turn in or otherwise destroy them from the date that the final rule is published in the federal register -- likely this Friday -- according to senior DOJ officials. Of course, banning bump stocks alone is mostly just a gesture because the devices themselves only provide users some mechanical help in firing off the number of rounds that the gun itself can already fire, at a rate at which the gun can also already fire. It’s sort of like banning goggles at the pool to stop people from looking under water. However, the gun lobby’s control over the Republican Party has been so strong that even Donald Trump has only mentioned possibly banning bump stocks every few weeks for over a year, while doing nothing until Tuesday. At least bump stocks are finally being banned! It is something. Maybe Trump wanted to create a meaningless sideshow in order to keep Americans from simply paying attention to the bad news that is the Trump crime family?

At least 12 advertisers flee Fox News hatred hour as Tucker Carlson digs in his xenophobic heels

As advertisers rush to end their association with the Fox News star’s anti-immigration rhetoric, Tucker Carlson has opted to boldly maintain his bigotry, even going so far as to frame himself as the victim. In a Monday night rant on Tucker Carlson Tonight, the frozen food heir predictably presented himself as an oh-so-brave truth teller and victim of persecution who would NOT be swayed (and painted the Russia investigation as a “distraction”). Carlson indirectly addressed the backlash during his Monday night show, after replaying his Thursday night comments about the downside of immigration and doubling-down on them. «That's what we said. It's true,» Carlson said. «Those who won't shut up get silenced. ... The enforcers scream 'Racist!' on Twitter until everybody gets intimidated and changes the subject to the Russia investigation or some other distraction. It's a tactic, a well-worn one. Nobody thinks it's real. And it won't work with this show. We're not intimidated. We plan to try to say what's true until the last day.» In addition to doubling down on what he said Thursday night, words that became the first domino in the line of fleeing advertisers, Carlson also added new information to his initial rant. "And the truth is, unregulated mass immigration has badly hurt this country’s natural landscape. Take a trip to our southwestern deserts if you don’t believe it. Thanks to illegal immigration, huge swathes of the region are covered with garbage and waste that degrade the soil and kill wildlife.”

Oncology nurse deported last year is back home in US: 'This is really a dream that I never expected'

Maria Mendoza-Sanchez is back home in time for Christmas. The oncology nurse, deported 16 months ago, won her fight to return to the U.S., this past weekend leaving on a one-way flight from Mexico to Oakland, California. “This is really a dream that I never expected,” she said, surrounded by her three children. “Thank God for everybody. I’m really happy to be back.” It wasn’t an easy fight for this family, which was ripped straight through the middle by the Trump administration. Ordered to leave last year, Mendoza-Sanchez and her husband, Eusebio, were forced to take their youngest child, a U.S. citizen, with them while their older daughters tried to carry on with their lives here. “There were many nights I couldn’t sleep,” she told cameras on her return. “There many days I was ready to give up.” But she didn’t, and a cautiously optimistic development from this past spring became a full-fledged reality. “The journey home required a winning ticket in a visa lottery this spring, then a series of approvals from agencies in a Trump administration that has taken an increasingly hard line on immigration from Latin America,” the San Francisco Chronicle reported.“The visa is an H-1B, reserved for skilled workers such as nurses in hospital cancer wards.” The hospital where Mendoza-Sanchez had lovingly cared for her patients sponsored her visa, and on Saturday she returned. One of her daughters, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient Vianney, was the first of the kids to hug their mom. “You’re home,” she cried. “It’s okay.” While Eusebio remains in Mexico, the family said their fight now turns to securing a visa for him in order to return home as well. Their fight also now turns to healing from the trauma of a senseless deportation that made national headlines. Mendoza-Sanchez had no criminal record. She’d been working and living here for decades. She has U.S. citizen children. Immigration officials refused to back off her deportation anyway. “When I left the airport,” she recalled, “I’m glad that I didn’t turn around when I said goodbye to my kids. I think if I had turned around and seen that much pain, I wouldn’t have been able to leave.” “Now that she was back,” the San Francisco Chronicle reported, “her eldest child, Viannney, summed up the 16-month separation from the family’s point of view. ‘This was the best Christmas present I’ve ever gotten,’ she said. ‘I don’t need anything else.’”

The Trump foundation is no more thanks to New York's attorney general

The Trump Foundation’s in trouble. Real trouble. The New York attorney general’s office has been after the foundation almost since the get-go, and that persistence has paid off: The Trump Foundation’s admitted defeat, and the Trumps have agreed to dissolve the “charity” under court supervision.  The AG’s judicial dissolution proceeding was filed Oct. 25 against the foundation, President Donald Trump, and his children. It’s 27 pages of devastating reading, at least from the Trump perspective. The AG is proceeding against the foundation and family members for breaches of fiduciary duty, improperly administering foundation assets, and “wrongful related party transactions.”   New York Supreme Court Justice Saliann Scarpulla ruled on Nov. 23 that the suit should be allowed to go forward. The foundation could have kept fighting the inevitable, but its illegal tendencies were impressive even by Trump standards. Here’s one way to summarize it: xThe New York State Attorney General signed a stipulation dissolving the Trump Foundation — the Trump “philanthropy” that operated like a personal piggy bank for the president.— Tim O'Brien (@TimOBrien) December 18, 2018 The parade of pecuniary peccadillos committed by the foundation reads like a bad SNL skit. You can almost imagine Alec Baldwin’s Trump attempting to explain how each expenditure was somehow justifiable under law. xReminder: The Trump Foundation’s largest gift — $264,631 — was used to renovate a fountain outside Trump’s Plaza Hotel https://t.co/ylSfDPAmpD https://t.co/SFvKT8sb2n— Bloomberg Opinion (@bopinion) December 18, 2018 That same year, Trump used the foundation for another even more overtly suspicious item.

Former National Enquirer editor implies the magazine hid Ivanka and Jared's 'criminal activity'

Former National Enquirer senior editor Jerry George was on MSNBC Monday night with Ari Melber. The two men were discussing a variety of ways in which the Enquirer’s parent company AMI has actively worked to protect the Trump-Kushner family. It is already known that AMI helped cover up stories of Trump’s affairs, even helping to pay out “hush money” to the woman whose story threatened Trump during the 2016 election. AMI officials have agreed to tell prosecutors everything they know in regard to working with the Trump organization and campaign, and Melber wanted to know if there were more stories AMI had quashed for the Trumps. George: I know some of them, and there are stories involving, of course, the Trump-Kushner family. There are stories of, you know, sibling rivalry with the children, back biting, discord with his wife. Melber: Would you describe them, because obviously we're talking about things that haven't come out and we haven't verified them, but would you characterize them as merely embarrassing—if you will—or do any of them arise to the level of being potentially criminal? George: Well, actually both. They're certainly embarrassing. And then when you get involved with the actions of his children, including his daughter and son-in-law, we're getting closer to criminal activity. George goes on to imply that AMI is not out of the woods just because it is getting immunity from the Mueller investigation. Saying “there’s still another shoe to drop,” George seemed to be referring to AMI receiving Saudi money (using the Kushner connection) to publish propaganda for Saudi prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS). When Melber pressed George on whether or not he had any evidence beyond what he has heard linking Kushner’s buddy MBS with AMI, George pointed out that shortly after a “strange” AMI cover was published that seemed to promote the Saudi prince, there is circumstantial evidence that a big load of cash went to AMI. George was talking about the magazine Greeting Americans, dedicated to MBS, published by AMI in March of this year.

Uncovering a key mechanism in assembly of Avian Sarcoma Virus, a relative of HIV-1

Researchers used NMR to detail how the matrix domain of the Avian Sarcoma Virus Gag protein binds to certain phospholipids. These phospholipids are vital for Gag protein binding to the plasma membrane of a cell, as the virus replicates and takes its first step toward virus formation and budding. ASV is widely used as a model to study mechanisms of HIV infection and replication.
