MANIERA 02 is featuring new furniture series designed by Anne Holtrop at the Brussels gallery. On view through November 17, 2018, MANIERA 02, Brussels is showcasing “The Barbar Series” consisting of two tables, two lamps, and a door handle. The components of the pieces are incomplete forms, cut-outs of an Abstract drawing based on the Barbar temple. The starting point of Anne Holtrop’s work is mostly existing materials or shapes that initially, and in itself, have nothing to do with architecture, to then develop these into something architectural. The new furniture series designed by Anne Holtrop is named after Bahrain’s Barbar Temple — an archaeological site located in the village of Barbar — and considered to be part of the Dilmun culture. The most recent of the three Barbar temples were rediscovered by a Danish archaeological team in 1954. A further two temples were discovered on the site — with the oldest dating back to 3000 BC. The temples were built of limestone blocks, believed to have been carved out from Jidda Island.“The table is made from slabs of silver travertine sourced from a quarry in Tivoli near Rome. Each piece of stone varies in color and is marked by organic, irregular pores that were once imprinted in the sedimentary rock by vegetation,” the gallery writes.“Despite the table’s solidity, a unique production technique was developed to make the pieces in the lightest way possible. The underside of the table-top is hollowed out to create a rib structure similar to an architectural vault. This technique made it possible to create a table surface out of one slab of stone, while also makes the table statically stronger,” the gallery says. The table comes in two different sizes: a high version (2700 x 1200 x 730 mm) and a low (2000 x 900 x 400 mm).“The arc-shaped lamp is made entirely of glass. Because of its intricate details — the irregular shape and sharp corners — it required a lengthy process before the first prototype could be realized and all the right steps for its production were found,” states the press release from the gallery.First, glass is melted into an uneven mould. Different colors require different melting temperatures, and the contractions and behaviour of the cooling glass are difficult to predict. The lamp comes in two different versions: a table lamp in light green, the natural color of glass (505 x 355 x 560 mm), and a floor lamp in a dense, dark green color (505 x 355 x 860 mm).“The door handle (393 x 180 x 25 mm) is made out of sand-cast brass, in an attempt to reveal the unexpected potential of the material. Once the handle is removed from the mold, it is alloyed with chemical platinum, which gives the object an intense dark green coloration and emphasizes the brass as a living material,” the gallery says. The exhibition is on view through November 17, 2018 at MANIERA o2, 27 – 28, Place de la Justice, 1000 Brussels, Germany. For details, visit: https://www.maniera.be/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition. http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
