Austria will use a 9,000-year-old building material made of sand, silt, and clay to create its pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai, showcasing an age-old technique in sustainable construction. The exterior of the Austrian Pavilion will be made up of 60 interlaced cones of differing heights created from loam, a compostable soil that has been used in construction for millennia.Loam, the oldest and simplest building material in the world, is an essential component of the pavilion. The cones will be positioned in such a way to allow for natural ventilation, reducing the temperature by up to 10 degrees Celsius and eliminating the need for mechanical air conditioning — representing intelligent resource-efficient architecture that is as robust as it is smart. The concept of the pavilion underlines the fact that Austria is synonymous with a highly developed, economical use of resources. Because of this Austrian core competence, the Austrian pavilion consumes 75 percent less energy than the average building in Dubai.Located in Expo 2020 Dubai’s Opportunity Thematic District, the pavilion will also offer a haven for relaxation and contemplation.Another part of the exhibition is a separate “InnovationLab” dedicated to Austria’s innovative strength. Temporary exhibitions, workshops, and installations enable topics to be explored in depth. Research institutes, businesses, and institutions will be given a platform to present their solutions. The Austria Pavilion represents the country’s ambition to use Expo 2020 Dubai as an opportunity to delve into its past in order to create a fresh dialogue for solving modern-day challenges. With striking visuals and thought-provoking ideas, the pavilion will underline the nation’s status as a multifaceted powerhouse of innovation.“What makes the pavilion so exceptional is not that it sets a new record in height or some other superficial attribute. It is the magic of loam cones which, thanks to an intelligent concept, provide a pleasant room climate in a completely natural way and create a haven of tranquillity at the EXPO mega-event — magic that is absolute reality,” explains Commissioner Beatrix Karl.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
