Origami-inspired MPavilion 2018 — with wings opening out to welcome the city into the pavilion itself — by Spanish architect Carme Pinos is open to the public now.The pavilion is widely considered to be the southern hemisphere’s answer to the Serpentine Pavilion, and has featured designers such as Rem Koolhaas, Bijoy Jain, and Amanda Levete.Carme Pinos is one of the world’s leading architectural voices, with projects spanning public architecture, social housing, urban refurbishment, and furniture and object design.Carme values experiential volumes over signature heroic buildings. Her philosophy is one of inclusive social interaction with and within her designs. “Whenever I can, I design places where movements and routes intersect and exchange, spaces where people identify as part of a community, but also feel they belong to universality,” said Carme, describing her practice.Naomi Milgrom AO, chair of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, who commissioned Carme Pinos to design MPavilion 2018, said upon the opening: “Working with Carme to bring her inspiring MPavilion design to life has been an absolute pleasure. Carme’s vision opens Australia to conversations about how to make our cities more inclusive through design. It’s a privilege to commission a work with such international and future-thinking insight.”2018 MPavilion is the fifth edition of the annual summer program, and is supported by the City of Melbourne, Victorian State Government through Creative Victoria and ANZ. Previous pavilions were designed by Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten of OMA (2017), Bijoy Jain of Studio Mumbai (2016), and Amanda Levete (2015.)MPavilion 2018 was brought to fruition with the building partners Kane Contructions and ACE Contractors, building surveyors Gardner Group, and landscape architects Tract, who won at the 2018 VIC Landscape Architecture Awards for their work on MPavilion 2017; lighting designer Ben Cobham of bluebottle; along with Coleby Consulting, Otway Precast, and Britton Timbers International.“It is my honor and pleasure to have this opportunity to design a new pavilion for the Naomi Milgrom Foundation. It is a great responsibility to create a unique place in this special park with views over Melbourne — a city to which I have deep attachments. I am inspired by the fact that this new project will become a cultural destination for the city,” Carme had commented on her commission for MPavilion 2018.MPavilion 2018 is open in the Queen Victoria Gardens, Southbank Arts Precinct through February 3, 2019.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
