The architectural and design firm Snohetta has created a rotating book pavilion for the British Land to celebrate Paddington Central’s first year as a Design Route at the London Design Festival.Taking inspiration fron the traditional principles of a library, the mechanical, rotating pavilion of oversized books will flip to create a variety of spaces, ranging from quiet and reflective to extrovert and public. Encouraging exploration, interaction and reflection, the pavilion will allow visitors to immerse themselves in a world of literature.“The idea of the book pavilion was to enable people to fully immerse themselves into a book, and live the story, just as a child does when they hear a bed time story, the giant life size pages bring the pavilion to life, and allows the community to have a space where they can also tell stories,” Snohetta says.Located in Kingdom Street, the installation highlights British Land’s commitment to creating “places people prefer.” Delivering spaces that make a positive difference to people’s lives is integral to British Land’s design ethos, as is its dedication to creating environments where people can work, relax, and socialize. All visitors to the Snohetta Book Pavilion are encouraged to explore, interact, and reflect on the build and revel in an installation that has been built with a very specific purpose in mind. It is an essential stop on this year’s Design Route. Each book will have an insert that encourages readers to pass on the publication, or return it so that someone else can immerse themselves into the joy of reading.Snohetta is a pioneering architectural and design firm based in Oslo and New York with high-profile buildings including the Alexandria Library in Egypt and the only cultural building on the World Trade Center memorial site. Snohetta began as a collaborative architectural and landscape workshop, and has remained true to its trans-disciplinary way of thinking since its inception. Museums, products, reindeer observatories, graphics, landscapes, and dollhouses get the same care and attention to purpose. The pavilion will be revealed on September 13, 2018 as a permanent installation.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
