In his Tuesday speech before the United Nations General Assembly, Donald Trump did something that is incredibly rare: he spoke before an audience that wasn’t hand-selected as Trump supporters. And in doing so, he discovered that there were still people out there unwilling to pretend the emperor’s clothes were anything less than a joke. As the New York Times reports, what Trump said in front of the assembled crowd was to him “little more than a minor boast.” It was a “well-worn line” about Trump’s vast accomplishment that is regularly trotted out for attendees of his frequent rallies. It certainly wasn’t intended as a punch line, but that’s the reaction it received. On the planet’s biggest stage, with more than 100 world leaders gathered with their ministers, ambassadors and dignitaries of every stripe, while news cameras from as many countries broadcast the speech in as many languages, they laughed. As Dana Milbank states at the Washington Post, Donald Trump frequently insisted during his campaign that “the world is laughing at us.” It wasn’t true then. But it is now. And that’s an issue. It’s not just an issue for the fact that being the laughingstock of the world is never a good look for any country. It’s the sort of position that leads to groups of erstwhile allies creating new alliances that pointedly excise the butt of the joke—as America’s allies did on the very same day in creating a treaty to route around the ill-considered withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. It’s an issue because the laughter is overshadowing the remainder of the speech. Trump wanted to the world to listen to the rest of that speech. They really, really should. So should America. If his rambling address, the words that Trump delivered at the UN weren’t just un-American, that is, lacking in support for those things America has long supported and believed it. They were deliberately and provocatively anti-American, as in directly counter to the principles of the nation, to studied positions achieved after only much trial, and to the continued health of the United States and the world. Hiding behind the snickers was a thunderclap—the sound of a door closing firmly on the “American century.” It would be both inaccurate and more than a little silly to suggest that the tide of neo-fascist nationalism, racism, and xenophobia that’s pressing liberal democracy across the world state began with Trump. But Trump’s victory showed that what had been taking as a passing cloud was in fact a gathering storm, one that could hit anywhere. And it revealed that the face America wanted to present to the world—of a “good” nation that supports justice, fights for the oppressed, speaks out against dictators, and seeks fairness in its dealings—is the self-delusion that our worst enemies have always claimed.
Christine Blasey Ford’s sexual assault allegation against Brett Kavanaugh didn’t come out of thin air in 2018, but Senate Republicans don’t want to hear about that. Although Republicans are not calling witnesses, Ford’s attorneys have sent them declarations from four people who Ford told about her experience, including her husband. In her declaration, Adela Gildo-Mazzon said Ford told her about the alleged assault during a June 2013 meal at a restaurant in Mountain View, California, and contacted Ford’s attorneys on Sept. 16 to tell them Ford had confided in her five years ago. “During our meal, Christine was visibly upset, so I asked her what was going on,” Gildo-Mazzon said in her declaration. “Christine told me she had been having a hard day because she was thinking about an assault she experienced when she was much younger. She said she had been almost raped by someone who was now a federal judge. She told me she had been trapped in a room with two drunken guys, and that she had escaped, ran away and hid.” Another friend says Ford described her experience with Kavanaugh in response to a discussion of Stanford rapist Brock Turner, while a third says that after she wrote on social media about her own experience of sexual assault, Ford approached her and “told me that when she was a young teen, she had been sexually assaulted by an older teen,” who she identified as a federal judge. In addition, Ford told her husband that she had a history of sexual assault “around the time we got married,” and went into more detail in couple’s therapy in 2012. Republicans want the public to believe that Ford just suddenly made this up for political reasons in 2018, but she’s been talking about it for years, with the fact that Kavanaugh had become a federal judge clearly weighing in her thinking. Because of course if you found out that the drunk football player who attacked you in high school had become a federal judge, it would feel like a significant fact about the judiciary and the justice system as you discussed things like Brock Turner’s sentence and other women's experiences of sexual assault. Help take back the Senate! Can you give $3 each to Jacky Rosen in Nevada and Beto O'Rourke in Texas?
After Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh inexplicably appeared on the most partisan network in America to “make his case” that he was neither the man who sexually assaulted Dr. Christine Blasey Ford in high school, nor was he the man who drunkenly shoved his penis in the face of Yale classmate Deborah Ramirez while his buddy cheered him on, yelling “kiss it!” Kavanaugh painted himself as a “choir boy” and said he was a virgin in high school and “many years after.” Frankly, the virgin part is quite believable. But, that has no bearing on whether he did the acts his female accusers describe. During the Fox News interview, Kavanaugh claimed the drinking age was 18 years old back then and he’d been drinking legally, but never to the point of being blacked out. Aside from the fact that the law had changed to 21 years old when Kavanaugh was 17 years old, the “choir boy” image Kavanaugh painted in the interview has prompted even more classmates to come forward to refute this image. Liz Swisher, who described herself as a friend of Kavanaugh in college, said she was shocked that — in an interview focused largely on his high school years and allegations of sexual misconduct — he strongly denied drinking to the point of blacking out. “Brett was a sloppy drunk, and I know because I drank with him. I watched him drink more than a lot of people. He’d end up slurring his words, stumbling,” said Swisher, a Democrat and chief of the gynecologic oncology division at the University of Washington School of Medicine. “There’s no medical way I can say that he was blacked out. . . . But it’s not credible for him to say that he has had no memory lapses in the nights that he drank to excess.” Swisher is not alone in refuting Kavanaugh. Depicting himself as a model student was enough to push classmate Lynne Brookes over the edge, compelling her to come forward because of the seriousness of the position and his obvious lies around it.

Ryan Fitzpatrick finally came back to earth in Monday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it is not expected to cost the veteran quarterback his starting job — at least in the short term.Jameis Winston is returning from a three-game suspension this week, and the assumption has been that he will serve as Tampa’s backup quarterback for at least a game. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, “all signs” point to that happening. While he threw three interceptions in a 30-27 loss to the Steelers, Fitzpatrick had his third consecutive game with over 400 yards passing and nearly lead the Bucs back from a 30-10 halftime deficit. He already has over 1,200 yards and 11 touchdown passes on the season. With the Buccaneers having a short week to prepare for Sunday’s road game against the Chicago Bears, it makes sense for Winston to sit out at least another week. That will allow him time to get back in the swing of things, and it will also give Tampa Bay coach Dirk Koetter another week to evaluate whether or
The Philadelphia Eagles have struggled early in the season to find the offensive consistency that made them the best team in football a year ago, but help is on the way.On Wednesday, Eagles coach Doug Pederson revealed that star wide receiver Alshon Jeffery has been cleared for contact. His status for Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans is in question, but he is clearly inching closer to a return. Jeffery played through a shoulder injury all of last season before undergoing surgery following the Super Bowl. He managed to catch nine touchdowns during the regular season and was an even bigger factor in the playoffs, catching two touchdowns in the NFC title game and one in the Super Bowl.Carson Wentz finally returned last week from his ACL rehab, and the Eagles have gone 2-1 in their first three games. They should be even better as they continue to get key players back and healthy.
