Distinct and rare furniture works by French designer Jean Royère are on view at the Galerie Patrick Seguin, London, through September 1, 2018. The featured works evoke the classic elegance of a French mid-century home.Royère is considered a groundbreaking figure in mid-twentieth century French design. A garden furniture project he undertook in 1931 bloomed into a lifelong passion for designing furniture, until he retired in 1972. “In a world that was rapidly shifting towards the modern, Royère adeptly grasped and refined the techniques he had accumulated in the cabinet-making workshops of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine and later at the design firm Gouffé that reproduced 18th c. French furniture, and artfully applied them to an aesthetic that was distinctly of his time,” a description note on the exhibition by Galerie Patrick Seguin states. The designer was intrigued by animal and vegetal shapes, and used these as sources of inspiration for designing furniture. According to the gallery, “His (Royère’s) 5-arm ‘Bouquet’ sconce does not make direct allusion to a flower, but blossoms abundantly on the wall on which it is posed. In addition to seeing nature as the basis for his overarching designs, Royère would also adorn his works with dried flowers and plants, as in the ‘Herbier’ cabinet and low table. In integrating marquetry into his oeuvre, Royère modernized the traditional savoir-faire he admired by emphasizing the artistic over the formal.”The exhibition is on view through September 1, 2018 at Galerie Patrick Seguin, 45-47 Brook St - Mayfair, London W1K 4HN For more information, visit: https://www.patrickseguin.com/en/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at Jean Royère’s furniture designs.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
