Trump's first choice for his third chief of staff says no

Donald Trump isn’t getting his first choice to replace John Kelly in the impossible, ugly job of Trump chief of staff. Nick Ayers, Mike Pence’s chief of staff, won’t be taking the job, leaving Trump scrambling not just to find a replacement candidate but to save face: The president on Sunday disputed news reports that he had settled on Mr. Ayers as his pick. “I am in the process of interviewing some really great people for the position of White House Chief of Staff,” he said on Twitter. “Fake News has been saying with certainty it was Nick Ayers, a spectacular person who will always be with our #MAGA agenda. I will be making a decision soon!” But two people close to Mr. Trump said that a news release announcing Mr. Ayers’s appointment had been drafted, and that the president had wanted to announce it as soon as possible. Ayers says he’s going home to Georgia with his family, which includes three young children, and he will reportedly work on a pro-Trump super PAC. It’s not just the young kids, though: Ayers was also skeptical of taking the job based on the challenges that Kelly and his predecessor, Reince Priebus, faced in the position, and talks between the two sides broke down, according to an administration official with direct knowledge of the negotiations. Ayers, 36, also had faced opposition among many senior White House aides, who worried that his elevation could trigger departures of other high-level staff members. It doesn’t take a wild leap of the imagination to wonder how much of a role the looming legal threats to Trump played in Ayers’ decision, either. Trump is now reported to be considering some of his administration’s top sycophants, including budget director Mick Mulvaney, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, and Robert Lighthizer, the U.S. trade representative, as well as House Freedom Caucus Chair Mark Meadows.

NBC's Chuck Todd needs to show receipts or apologize for both-sidesing Wisconsin GOP power grab

The traditional media’s need to say both sides did a thing when only one side did it is well known, but this is one for legend. Reporting on the Republican power grabs in Wisconsin and Michigan, with Republicans stripping the governor’s and attorney general’s office of power simply because Democrats will be taking over those offices, NBC’s Chuck Todd said this: “Democrats have done this in the past to Republican governors in lame duck sessions in other states.” Chuck, we’re going to need some receipts, because this looks like a lie. In fact, a reported piece from NBC says the opposite: Both national and statewide experts said they had never seen such efforts like the ones in Wisconsin and Michigan before — and that the GOP actions indicate a new level of toxicity has arrived in state government. «Until recently, no party has tried to hamstring their opponents' future power to the way the Republicans are doing it now,» John Chamberlin, professor emeritus of political science and public policy at the University of Michigan, told NBC News, adding, «They are a bad sign that state politics is being infected by the toxic national political environment.» Well, Chuck? You don’t throw out a line like that and just leave it hanging when the evidence is lined up against you.

Morning Digest: While Steve King only scraped by, his seat gave GOP the win in governor's race

The Daily Kos Elections Morning Digest is compiled by David Nir, Jeff Singer, Stephen Wolf, and Carolyn Fiddler, with additional contributions from David Jarman, Steve Singiser, Daniel Donner, James Lambert, David Beard, and Arjun Jaikumar. Leading Off ● Governor-by-CD: Daily Kos Elections' project to calculate the results of the 2018 Senate and gubernatorial elections by congressional district is out with data for four competitive states: Iowa, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin. As with past cycles, we'll be releasing data after states certify their final results. You can find each state's certification deadlines at Ballotpedia. You can find our master list of states here, which we'll be updating as we add new states, and you can also find our complete set of data from this and previous cycles at Daily Kos. Campaign Action We'll start with Iowa, a state that gave Democrats some decidedly mixed results in 2018. Team Blue unseated GOP Reps. Rod Blum and David Young, which gives them three of the state's four congressional districts. But at the same time, GOP Gov. Kim Reynolds held her seat by beating Democrat Fred Hubbell 50.3-47.5. Hubbell did manage to win the three congressional districts that will be represented by Democrats in January. Hubbell carried the 1st District in the northeast corner of the state by a narrow 49-48 margin, while Democrat Abby Finkenauer unseated Blum 51-46. Hubbell won the 2nd District 51-47, while Democratic Rep. Dave Loebsack won his seventh term 55-43. Both these seats voted for Barack Obama in 2012 by the same 56-43 margin, and each of them backed Donald Trump 49-45. The 3rd District in the Des Moines area supported Hubbell 51-47, while Democrat Cindy Axne beat Young 49-47. This seat is often very competitive turf, having gone from 51-47 Obama to 49-45 Trump. Reynolds managed to more than offset Hubbell's small wins in the other three seats by carrying the 4th District in western Iowa by a huge 59-39 margin. Reynolds' coattails may have saved white supremacist Rep. Steve King, who ran a very complacent campaign and only defeated Democrat J. D. Scholten 50-47. By contrast, Mitt Romney won 53-45 here, while Trump took the 4th District 61-34. You can find our data and writes for Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin below in Grab Bag.

The 'Smocking Gun' — Trump retreats behind the tiniest, whiniest claims yet

Nothing screams innocence like retreating behind claims that no one has rock solid proof of guilt. Following last week’s triple-play of court filings centered around Donald Trump’s former national security advisor Michael Flynn, Trump attorney Michael Cohen, and Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort, everyone seemed to understand that Trump’s goose is deeply, and thoroughly … let’s say “cooked.” Only Trump continued to make claims that the documents last week were somehow Good for John McCain Donald Trump. But somewhere over the weekend, a modicum of truth was apparently forced through the thick orange makeup and thicker skull. Because on Monday morning, Trump had retreated to the tiniest, whiniest corner of “you can’t prove it.” No Smocking Gun, dammit. No Smocking Gun, no crime! Someone apparently breached the sanctity of Trump’s Executive Time to bring in an emergency dictionary, because the Smocking Gun tweet has been pulled down in favor of a whine that features the correct spelling. The correct spelling for the symbol meaning absolute proof of guilt beyond a shadow of a doubt.   But it’s too late now. The meme is out. From now on, this is the term that’s going to define everything that comes from the Russia investigation: The quest for the Smocking Gun. And if that tweet isn’t ridiculous enough, Trump’s follow-up attempt to shrug off the stack of evidence settling in around his shoulders is even more laughable.

Open thread for night owls: Fox News viewers aren't hearing much about North Carolina election fraud

As revelations of an orchestrated campaign of election fraud roil the 9th congressional district of North Carolina, a scheme that allegedly included absentee ballot destruction and Republican operatives altering other ballots to give Republican congressional candidate Mark Harris a boost, Fox News is uncharacteristically reluctant to inform their viewers of what could be the most substantial incident of election fraud in recent history. Fox & Friends First reported on the story for less than 30 seconds, claiming that “ballots may have been illegally collected” without making it clear which party’s candidate is facing allegations. The hosts then pivoted to yet another story on incoming freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. [...] Dana Perino, host of The Daily Briefing, hosted a segment which explained the allegations, but again did not say which party likely benefited from the alleged election fraud. Additionally, the segment pointed out that Harris was still technically in the lead by 905 votes, but did not specifically mention that the alleged election fraud very well could have impacted this outcome. To be fair to the network, there has been plenty of other breaking news competing for viewers' limited attention of late. Tucker Carlson, for example, hosted a segment in which his guest warned that «feminism has ambitions to take over civilization» and are «trying to disappear males.» It is difficult to focus on the validity of American elections when the very existence of menfolk is in question. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday he won't seek political office, dismissing suggestions that he run for governor or senator in New York. Asked about a poll that shows him favored in a hypothetical matchup for the governor's race, Powell said, «I'm not going to be running for office even in my beloved home state of New York, as flattering as that poll might be.» [...] «I don't think I've ever said I wouldn't be interested in public life again,» Powell said. «I think I've repeatedly said over the course of nine-plus years that I've had no interest in political office.» The GOP bench in NY is exactly one man deep without a Powell candidacy -- Giuliani. Expect state Republicans to keep talking up a Powell candidacy over the next two years as they grow increasingly desperate in their efforts to take on HIllary and hold the governorship.
