“Leading Republicans” are calling on the Trump administration to stop tearing families apart at the border, the New York Times claims. But while it’s true that a few Republicans have stepped up to call for an end to the practice, they aren’t the party’s leaders. When House Speaker Paul Ryan said how very sad he is that children are being taken from their parents, he also said—falsely—that Congress would need to act to stop it. The Republicans who are being at least a little honest about what’s going on are not leading their party. Sen. Susan Collins acknowledged that this policy is something “the administration has decided to do,” and went on to say that “That is traumatizing to the children, who are innocent victims. So, sure, some Republicans are vocally unhappy about the policy—and some are doubtless worried about how images of terrified two-year-olds will play in November’s elections—but the party’s leaders are enforcing child-stealing as a policy and lying about what it would take to stop it.
