This year’s Frieze art fair, which took place on New York’s Randall’s Island, featured a brand new layout designed by Universal Design Studio (UDS). The London-based studio, which has designed several venues for Frieze London, was asked to reimagine the venue for the fair’s New York edition. The new layout featured five giant white tents allowing interiors to be infused with indirect light while keeping the artworks preserved. As quoted by Dezeen, Richard McConkey, UDS associate director, stated: “Previously there was another iteration by SO-IL, fantastic and beautiful, but it was basically built as one solid structure snaked along the river. But our brief was to make this massive fair feel more intimate.” He further explained: “What we were trying to do is to bring areas of natural light into the fair. As it’s an art fair, all of the works are very sensitive, so no direct sunlight can hit an artwork. So the whole fair has been orientated to allow light sections in, with diffused panels in different areas.”The five tents were placed adjacent to each other in a row covering over 28,000 square meters. The gabled structures were supported by steel frames. Use of “transparent or translucent panels in the ends allow light into each space,” noted Dezeen. The fair site, located on Randall’s Island in the south of The Bronx, occupies a long, narrow stretch between the Harlem river on the west and Ichan Stadium on the east. UDS placed restaurants and sponsor lounges on the riverside allowing for outdoor seatings and waterfront views. The decks are dotted with “trees growing up through the floor, as no flora could be removed to accommodate the structure,” stated Dezeen. http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
