The Fine Art Society is hosting an exhibition of art and design. On display in the gallery are pieces of furniture and applied arts by renowned British and international designers. The exhibition is showcasing works by Terence Conran, Basil Spence, Borge Mogensen, Philip Arctander, and Hans Jorgensen Wegner, alongside a selection of modern and contemporary paintings.Terence Orby Conran, (born October 4, 1931, Surrey, England), is an English designer, restaurateur, and businessman credited with making stylish housewares and home decor available to a wider market beginning in the 1960s. Conran attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts. He established a furniture studio while still a student, sharing the space with one of his professors, artist Eduardo Paolozzi. In 1956, he formed the Conran Design Group, which, in addition to subsuming his furniture business, designed interiors and retail spaces. In 1964, Conran opened Habitat, a store selling his furniture as well as a range of then-obscure housewares such as woks in London’s Chelsea neighborhood.Basil Spence is most famously associated with his modern design for the rebuilding of Coventry Cathedral following its destruction by bombing during World War II. Building commenced for his competition-winning program in 1955, and by the time the new cathedral was consecrated in 1962, it had become an international symbol of regeneration and reconciliation. The old cathedral in the historic center of Coventry was destroyed during an air raid in World War II. In 1951, Spence was chosen from over 200 architects who had entered a competition to design a new cathedral to replace it.Borge Mogensen (1914-1972) was one of the most influential designers in shaping Danish Modern design and present day Fredericia’s founding designer from 1955 until his death in 1972. He found inspiration all over the world in his quest to create everyday objects that would endure for generations. Mogensen’s most recognised pieces were developed during his collaboration and friendship with Fredericia CEO Andreas Graversen. As a driving force behind “Danish Modern,” Hans J. Wegner helped change the general public’s view of furniture in the 1950s and 1960s. His passion for designing chairs, more than 500 of them, is recognized worldwide and reflected in his title ‘the Master of the Chair.’ He is famous for integrating perfectly executed joints with exquisite shapes and combining them with a constant curiosity for materials and deep respect for wood and its natural characteristics. ‘Art & Design’ is on view through May 23, 2018 at The Fine Art Society, 148 New Bond Street London W1S 2JT, UK.For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/the-fine-art-society/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder Louise Blouin Read more
