Michigan bail reform bills aim to drop the price tag on the presumption of innocence

A bipartisan group of legislators in Michigan’s state House and Senate introduced a package of bills on March 13 that would result in major reforms of the state’s bail system. If the legislators are successful, low-income residents will no longer have to sit in jail before their trial dates just because they’re poor. In most U.S. states, the cash bail system in effect creates two separate criminal justice systems: one for the wealthy and well-off, and one that’s completely different for those who can’t purchase the presumption of their innocence. As Daily Kos reported in November, 451,000 people are currently incarcerated nationwide because they can’t pay bail amounts of as little as $300. According to state Democratic Rep. David LaGrand, who has been working on bail reform since 2014, on any given day “probably more than 10,000” people are incarcerated in Michigan alone due to their inability to post bail. According to LaGrand, his package of bills will accomplish four major reforms. The first will be to provide people who have been arrested with a financial disclosure form they can fill out and hand to judges so the judges have an idea how much bail—if any—those before their bench can afford to pay. “In Michigan right now, judges don’t necessarily know how much money people have available to them when the judge sets a bond,” LaGrand explained to Daily Kos. “That means judges can inadvertently set, for example, a $300 bond for someone who’s only got $200 in their pocket. And there’s no difference between a $300 bond and a $1 million bond if you’ve only got $200.” The second reform would require judges to explain their decisions when ruling on whether or not someone who has been arrested will be released or detained before trial. This will allow defendants to explain circumstances that judges may incorrectly assume make the defendants a flight risk.

Trump sent the military to build a new border fence. Thieves are now making off with it.

Even before Donald Tump declared a «national emergency» at the southern border (because refugees were trying to cross and Trump's toxic base doesn't like that), the xenophobe-in-chief had ordered active U.S. troops to the border to «support» Border Patrol efforts and to string a few sections of makeshift border fence using concertina wire, more commonly known as razor wire. It may have meant thousands in America's armed forces were spending the holidays away from their families, but at least the border would be «secure,» right? Finally, an impenetrable military line worthy of our status as great power. Or, you know, not that. Because thieves in Tijuana, Mexico are simply making off with sections of the wire, selling them to city homeowners who are using it to shore up their own home «security.» Some homes in the same area had identical wire installed in front of their homes, as an added layer of protection to their property lines and fences, but residents declined to comment about how they obtained the material. Tijuana officials report between 15 to 20 arrests for the nighttime thefts, while government contractors on this side of the border work to replace the stolen wire. There is no word on how the mighty American administration will respond to this dangerous attack on our military fortifications. Will Trump order military action, perhaps a shock and awe—styled incursion into Mexico to retrieve the stolen wire? Are airstrikes in order? Surely, we are dealing with dangerous foes, if they have managed to make off with Donald Trump's border wall armed only with a pair of snippers and a handful of zip ties. Fear not, however. If Donald Trump can bring North Korea to the negotiation table, getting Absolutely Not A Damn Thing in exchange for severely curtailing military exercises with their South Korean enemies, it is certain he will deal with this problem with the same keen strategic thinking. But as of right now? Mexican homeowners are building walls ... and America is paying for them.

Devin Nunes' Cow now has more followers than Devin Nunes, thanks to boost from Twitter lawsuit

Congratulations to Devin Nunes' Cow! The parodic attack Twitter account now has more followers than Rep. Devin Nunes, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee and the man the account was set up to expose. Using lots of dairy and agricultural puns, like you do. The reason for the jump in followers from around 1,200 to more than 410,000 is Nunes' own lawsuit against Twitter, the Cow, and another account called Devin Nunes’ Mom. Nunes also named Republican operative Liz Mair. Sadly, Devin Nunes’ Mom has been suspended, so we don’t know how many followers she would have racked up. The accounts in question are neither Nunes’ cow nor Nunes’ mom, of course, but rather existed to troll him to the point where he trolled the entire world by suing Twitter for $250 million for letting people be mean to him. And now, more people are watching a fake cow be mean to a real member of Congress than are watching that real member of Congress lie about Donald Trump, Democrats, and “#StrawPolice socialists.” It’s not quite the comeuppance Nunes deserves, but it’s at least worth a giggle of schadenfreude.
