Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (MCA Chicago) is hosting an installation “Johnston Marklee: Grid is a Grid is a Grid is a Grid is a Grid” that will be on view through November 18, 2016.The Los-Angeles based architecture firm Johnston Marklee have been hired by the MCA Chicago to create a plan for the museum, which includes the redesign and relocation of the restaurant as well as other public places. Influenced by the MCA building’s design on a grid based logic, which not only set up the proportions of the spaces inside the building, but also influenced the exterior; Johnston Marklee created an immersive installation, which further accentuates the proportions of this grid system by applying a repeating square graphic on the café walls, along with creating a gridded ceiling plane that bifurcates the height of the space in half, making for a more intimate scale. This dropped ceiling plane alludes to the idea Johnston Marklee are contemplating in their design, where the mezzanine floor would be inserted into this space to create room for art making and meetings above and social engagement space below. The installation is on view in the MCA café o the second floor of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, 220 East Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611, United States.
