Michigan’s government is swinging into action in response to the rising tide of hate groups, bias incidents, and actual hate crimes in the state. In February, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights announced that it will create a database to keep track of bias incidents that don’t rise to the level of actual crimes. In early March, Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the formation of a new hate crimes unit. Those new initiatives will be a welcome counter to a concerning, and even frightening, set of trends. In just three years, for example, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported that the number of hate groups in Michigan alone has nearly doubled—from 19 in 2015 to 31 such groups in 2018. Like-minded haters getting together to vent their rage to one another is one thing. Increasingly, though, bigots are also taking action. Every advocacy group serving the state’s minorities reached by Daily Kos during a recent informal survey reported a significant increase in bias incidents and outright hate crimes in recent years. Carolyn Normandin, the regional director of the Anti-Defamation League’s Michigan office, said that in the past few years her office has seen “the largest uptick” in anti-Semitic incidents in the more than 40 years her organization has tracked them. Equality Michigan’s director of victim services, Serena Johnson, told Daily Kos that anti-LGBTQ bias incidents and hate crimes have finally leveled off in the past 10 months or so after spiking by roughly 29 percent following Donald Trump’s election. According to Dawud Walid, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Michigan office, his organization has documented a rise in the number of anti-Muslim incidents in Michigan since Barack Obama was first elected president. Walid added that the number has continued to rise since the inauguration of Donald Trump. Just last month, an Arab-American Ypsilanti resident awakened to find the words “sand (n-word)” written on his garage door. The Washtenaw County prosecutor denied that racial bias was behind the incident. The NAACP didn’t respond to requests for information about anti-black hate crimes and bias incidents in time for the deadline for this article.
A judge has ruled against 22 New York parents who had challenged the Rockland County Health Department’s decision to keep their unvaccinated children out of school. According to area news outlet Lohud, U.S. District Court Judge Vincent Briccetti refused to issue “a temporary injunction that would have allowed 44 unvaccinated children to go back to class at the Green Meadow Waldorf School” in the town of Chestnut Ridge. While this is not the end of the case, it does strike a blow against anti-vaxxer advocates, who had hoped that they could use the same religious objections to vaccines to immunize them from health officials’ obligations to the community at large. One school parent in favor of the decision told CBS News that she felt Judge Briccetti’s decision showed «that he's trying to mitigate a potential further outbreak and he's trying to keep everybody safe.» When the motion was filed by parents, Rockland County Attorney Thomas Humbach came out very hard against the anti-vaxxers, saying that the Supreme Court does not “import an absolute right in each person to be, at all time and in all circumstances, wholly freed from restraint; and, the right to practice religion freely does not include liberty to expose the community or the child to communicable disease or the latter to ill health or death.”
Trump ally Franklin Graham, an evangelical preacher who shoulders much of the blame for finally separating the American white evangelical movement from identifiable «Christianity» once and for all, traveled to Russia earlier this March to meet with prominent (and sanctioned) Russian officials. This raises two obvious questions. One: Why was evangelical Trump ally Franklin Graham traveling to Russia to meet with sanctioned Russian officials? And two: Why the hell was evangelical Trump ally Franklin Graham traveling to Russia to meet with sanctioned Russian officials? Per a captioned photo re-posted from the Duma Instagram account to Graham’s own Instagram account, the meeting with [sanctioned Russian Duma Speaker] Volodin focused “on the current state of U.S.-Russia relations,” including “the possibility of intensifying contacts between the State Duma and the U.S. Congress.” That's the story? That Franklin Graham trundled off to meet with U.S.-sanctioned Russian officials in an effort to make nicey-nicey on behalf of the U.S. Congress, which Graham isn't in, has never been in, and which has an exceedingly ample travel budget of its own for these things? Why? In an interview with RIA Novosti, a major Russian state-run outlet, Graham said he called Pence directly to tell him of the trip. “He was very happy to hear the news,” Graham said. “And he admitted that he fully supported my decision.” You know, Vice President Mike Pence has an entire government agency at his disposal to facilitate communications with Russia. It's called the State Department, and while the White House may have gutted a good portion of it, this is still the sort of thing that is right in its wheelhouse. Instead, we're going to ignore the State Department and have Franklin Graham pop over there? Uh huh.
New details have emerged about Boeing's shady practices and executive branch connections to the troubled company
Objectively, it’s difficult to deny that Republican Congressman Devin Nunes’ suit against Twitter and against a number of Twitter users, including Devin Nunes’ Cow and Devin Nunes’ Mom, is hilarious. Citing tweets that criticize Nunes for everything from his relationship with Trump to his faux farmer image, most of what’s in the legal filing seems purposely designed to increase disdain for the California congressman and emphasize just how ridiculous many of his positions have been. But the suit was written with a serious purpose—and that purpose has little to do with making money from an imaginary bovine. The language in Nunes’ suit, which is filled with insinuations that his critics are funded by the DNC, or Fusion GPS, or “prominent Democrat funders,” isn’t written with a judge as an audience. It was clearly created more as a publicity effort for Nunes, generating more air time on Fox and more funds in his bank account. On that second point at least, Nunes could be surprisingly successful. Even as he was leaping from cars and getting hauled in front of the Ethics Committee, Nunes was rewarded with one of the highest campaign bankrolls in the House for his over-the-top, damn-the-facts devotion to Donald Trump. But as the Washington Post makes clear, Nunes’ action is also about silencing critics. And not just critics of Devin Nunes. The “shadow banning” claims against Twitter aren’t just unproven—they’re easily proven wrong. Still, a social media company having to defend itself from paying out a quarter-billion dollars might be extra-shy about taking any action. If conservatives want to make sure that social media companies take a completely hands-off attitude in addressing language that might be considered violent or racist … this isn’t a bad step. Twitter might not be so quick to haul off the next Alex Jones, or might allow the original to return. The attacks on individual users are also extremely unlikely to be successful, but, as in many cases, simply forcing individuals to engage with the legal system could prove draining both financially and emotionally. The threat of being pulled into court is enough that it chills future conduct—no matter how many animals, relatives, and body parts of Devin Nunes are currently operating Twitter accounts. And there’s another aspect of Nunes’ lawsuit that might be called ironic, but is better called simply racist.
In a highly predictable move, the White House refused to cooperate Thursday with congressional requests for information regarding Donald Trump's private conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. White House Counsel Pat Cipollone argued that both constitutional principle and executive privilege shield a president's diplomatic communications from congressional oversight. “The committees’ letters cite no legal authority for the proposition that another branch of the government can force the president to disclose diplomatic communications with foreign leaders or that supports forcing disclosure of the confidential internal deliberations of the president’s national security advisors,” Cipollone wrote in a five-page letter to three House committee chairs that was obtained by Politico. Cipollone's letter to House Oversight Chair Elijah Cummings, Foreign Affairs Chair Eliot Engel, and Intelligence Chair Adam Schiff follows a now-established White House pattern of stonewalling all congressional oversight efforts. The three Democrats had sought both documents and testimony from people at the White House and State Department with information related to Trump's mysterious communications with Putin, including their in-person meetings and telephone calls. Since being elected, Trump has reportedly communicated with Putin a total of 18 times that we know of, including four letters, nine phone calls, and five in-person meetings. Trump has gone to «extraordinary lengths» to conceal the content of his conversations with Putin, once seizing the notes of his own interpreter, instructing another not to discuss what transpired, and one time even foregoing having his own interpreter present and simply using Putin's instead. Cipollone argued that precedent is on the executive branch's side. “It is settled law that the Constitution entrusts the conduct of foreign relations exclusively to the Executive Branch, as it makes the President ‘the sole organ of the federal government in the field of international relations,’” Cipollone wrote.

New research suggests that targeted use of behavioural 'nudges' can encourage people to conserve water. Researchers found that rather than giving people general information about the importance of saving water, emphasizing the water conserving actions of others in the same social group -- for example university students or local residents -- encourages similar behavior changes and reduces water demand.
