Japanese architect Itsuko Hasegawa has been awarded the 2018 Royal Academy Architecture Prize for her significant contribution to architecture in Japan as well as across the globe. The judging panel described her as “one of Japan’s most important architects.” Itsuko Hasegawa graduated from the Department of Architecture at Kanto Gakuin University. She started her career with Japan’s Metabolists group of architects including Fumihiko Maki, Kenzo Tange, and Kisho Kurakawa. She also worked with Kazuo Shinohara, who was more inclined towards traditional Japanese architecture, before setting up her own practice in 1979. Dynamic forms created with simple materials give her buildings a lightness of touch.Architect and Royal Academician Louisa Hutton, who chaired the jury, said: “What I find most interesting about the architecture of Itsuko Hasegawa is the spirit of invention. Through this prize, we hope to bring her the much-needed recognition she deserves.”Some of Hasegawa’s notable projects include the Shonandai Cultural Centre in Fujisawa, the Sumida Culture Factory, the Yamanashi Museum of Fruit, and the Fukuroi Workshop Centre, noted e-flux.
