The Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, Québec, is currently hosting an exhibition of works titled “The University Is Now on Air: Broadcasting Modern Architecture.”The show is based on the module “A305: History of Architecture and Design, 1890–1939,” written and produced by The Open University, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom. The course was taught to the third-year undergraduate arts students at The Open University via television and radio broadcasts between 1975 and 1982. This was a new and innovative approach to sharing knowledge through the combination of mass media and mass education. The installation includes a series of oral history films featuring protagonists of the arts course, “A305: History of Architecture and Design, 1890–1939,” produced by the CCA and directed by Shahab Mihandoust. The films include interviews between Joaquim Moreno, the curator of the exhibition, and Stephen Bayley, Tim Benton, Adrian Forty, and Nick Levinson. The Open University was founded in 1969 with headquarters in Milton Keynes, UK. It was a significant experiment in distance and adult education, and also reflected the socially progressive reforms of the Labor Party between 1964 and 1970. A305 used publication, correspondence, and a system of local tutors organized in regional centers to disseminate that knowledge across an entire country.“The University Is Now on Air: Broadcasting Modern Architecture” runs through April 1, 2018, at Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), 1920 Baile St, Montreal, QC H3H 2S6, Canada. For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide-venues/288966/museum-overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
