Creative Hong Kong restaurant Popsy Modern Kitchen has concocted another menu that pairs art with food, using the best of British ingredients, for the Asian premiere of the photography exhibition “11 Millions Reasons.” Organized in partnership with the British Council in Hong Kong, and commissioned by People Dancing — a foundation for community and participatory dance — the show portrays the deaf and disabled community in a new light. The exhibition features 20 inspiring photographs by emerging UK-based photographer Sean Goldthorpe, and is an attempt to spark greater social acceptance and to positively profile the disabled community through dance as they reimagine iconic scenes and dances from classic films with People Dancing. The title also bears a deeper significance, representing an estimation of the number of people registered as disabled according to the UK government’s statistics.“We wanted to change perceptions, and for disabled people to see themselves within this campaign, and ultimately be included in our dance community,” said Louise Wildish, Producer of People Dancing. The exhibition features motivational dancing scenes inspired by the musical motion picture “Chicago,” as well as “Billy Elliot” and “Flashdance.” The aim is to “celebrate the energy, creativity, and diversity of disabled people who dance,” said Goldthorpe in a statement. The exhibition premiered at Popsy Modern Kitchen on October 5 and will run through November 20.Inspired by the occasion, Chef de Cuisine Mark Sin has designed highly elaborate three-course brunch, lunch, and dinner menus, available throughout the duration of the exhibition. Sin honors British culture as he reimagines the country’s most traditional dishes in the six-course Great Tasting Experience menu, which features the Shepherd’s Pie Philosophy, the Scotch Egg, and the comforting English Breakfast Tea Pudding. Visitors will have the chance to “taste” the works on show, elevating viewers’ art experience to new heights.Launched in November 2015 by food pairing specialist Jennifer Chung, the whimsical restaurant Popsy Modern Kitchen has made a name for itself by blending art and food together in meticulous and delectable creations. The restaurant has since partnered with art various organizations to create art-inspired menus and cocktails, notably for Art Basel and the Sovereign Art Foundation in Hong Kong.“11 Million Reasons” runs through November 20 at Popsy Modern Kitchen, Hong Kong.
