Kutaisi International Airport, voted among the world’s 13 most beautiful airports by “Curbed magazine’ (May 2017), is ready for extension. The airport opened in September 2012, and has grown rapidly over the past four and a half years, from around 13,000 passengers in its initial years to more than 300,000 in 2016. The number of passengers is expected to hit 1,000,000 by 2020. UNStudio, the architect firm that initially designed the airport, has once again been invited to design the extension that will facilitate the predicted growth. The airport serves as the gateway to the country that is fast emerging as the new tourist hotspot in the Caucasus region. UNStudio’s design is focused on the correct application of architecture and spatial design to provide for the health and comfort of all passengers. A pleasant and comfortable travel experience is created through enhanced transparency and openness of Arrival, Departure, and Central halls. UNStudio has taken into account the correct human scale, spatial language, flow, and materialization for these spaces to provide comfort for every visitor. One of the highlights of the design for the extension is an elevated plaza that runs up to the roof level, and features food and beverage outlets along with a green recreational zone and waiting area for passengers, visitors, and families. This outdoor space can also be used by United Airports for organizing events. For more information, visit: www.unstudio.com/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the project. Read more
