Moderne Gallery, Philadelphia recently presented works of legendary woodworker George Nakashima along with other celebrated designers at The Salon in New York.The gallery is known for its collection and exhibitions of vintage and contemporary furniture, ceramics, lighting, and accessories from 20th and 21st centuries. It represents works of artisans and craftspeople such as Wharton Esherick, Sam Maloof, George Nakashima, Arthur Espenet Carpenter, David Ebner, Wendell Castle, Miriam Carpenter, Karima Duchamp, Estelle Halper, John Eric Byers, Peter Voulkos, Makoto Yabe, Toshiko Takaezu, Gyokusendo, as well as French and American Art Deco.The Salon saw a unique collection from the gallery with works by Miriam Carpenter including her iconic trompe l’oeil hand-carved “feathers,” John Eric Byers’ wall panels, a Kimono cabinet by John Cederquist, and most significantly George Nakashima’s vintage furniture. The gallery also presented a rare collection of ceramics including French ceramic artist Karima Duchamp’s works, Neil Tetkowski’s ceramic mural and sculptures, American ceramicist Estelle Halper’s work from the 1950s and 1960s, Japanese-American ceramicist Makoto Yabe’s work from the 1980s, and a rare display of the Takaezu “trees.” Other highlights included Edward Moulthrop’s vintage turned wood bowls, Robyn Horn’s contemporary wood sculptures, a steel sculpture by Richard Roesch, and a rare Somnambient sculpture by Harry Bertoia.For more information, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/moderne-gallery/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peak at the collection.
