Centraal Museum, Utrecht, Netherlands, is currently hosting an exhibition of works titled “Early Droog: the early years of Droog Design.”The show features 50 works by Droog Design. The selection of works on display draws attention to the creations of this Dutch design collective. The museum houses the world’s largest collection of Droog Design with its first purchase dating back exactly 20 years. The exhibit features early designs as well as recent acquisitions. Droog Design became synonymous with the concept of Dutch Design even though it consisted of designers from other nationalities. The term rapidly became a quality marker of good design. “Early Droog: the early years of Droog Design” explores this relationship between design and the collective and what is the meaning of the concept.Droog Design was established as a collective in 1994 by Renny Ramakers and Gijs Bakker. Their early designs were innovative and accessible with elements of humor and wit thrown into the creations. The concept of ‘less is more’ mentality of Dutch design gained a new momentum with Droog Design. Employing unorthodox materials and existing objects, the designers gave fresh function to their creations. Prior to starting Droog Design, the designers Ramakers and Bakker presented works of designers such as Jurgen Bey and Hella Jongerius, among others, at the Paradiso Amsterdam and the Salone del Mobile in Milan. These works drew international attention to Dutch design and put it on the global design map.“Early Droog: the early years of Droog Design” runs through December 3, 2017, at Centraal Museum, Agnietenstraat 1, 3512 XA Utrecht, Netherlands. For details, visit: http://centraalmuseum.nl/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
