A three-day celebration of design begins in Italy as Lingotto Fiere in Turin opens its doors for Operæ 2017 on November 3.Operæ had commissioned designers from 10 international galleries to create unique objects in collaboration with a Piedmontese artisan. Maniera Gallery, Brussels invited brothers Silvio and Ambrosio Versino of Piovenefabi, an Italian architecture firm, to create its unique furniture series for the design festival. The Versino brothers specialize in extracting and processing Luserna, also known as gneiss — a dense metamorphic stone found in Val di Susa. Maniera is presenting “Light Conversation Pieces,” a series of monolithic stools and coffee tables created from gneiss. The pieces serve as geological samples, presenting the tectonics of Piedmont Alps in a tangible form. The works, resembling micro-architectures, feature rough top and smooth sidesm, giving a peek into the degree of compression and the layers of stone stratification. The gallery is also presenting an ensemble of domestic furniture developed by Belgium-based aDVVT (Architecten de Vylder Vinck Taillieu) using layered particle board. The series sports a structure that was challenging to create with the shortest vertical wooden plate carrying the longest horizontal one. One of the distinct pieces from the collection is the green “Kamer Paolo” stool, which was developed for a winery in Italy. The color of the stool matches the original green hue of Sasso’s wine bottles. The exhibition is on view from November 3 to November 5, 2017 at Lingotto Fiere, Turin, Italy. For more information, visit: www.maniera.be/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
