Modernity, Stockholm recently added Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen’s works to its collection. The group of furniture consists of sofa, armchairs, and table. These were used to furnish the suites at the Munksnäs hotel. A retreat greatly favored by the Helsinki elite. Eliel Saarinen (1873-1950) was a 20th-century architect of the Finnish romantic style. He was also the father of Eero Saarinen. The architect studied painting and architecture at Helsinki University. He along with Herman Gesellius and Armas Lindgren conceptualized and created the Finnish Pavilion for the 1900 World Fair in Paris. For each commission that Saarinen worked on, he also designed furniture and at times rugs. His noteworthy designs are the Hannes chair, 1908, and the 1910 White Armchair. The chairs in the collection are of a generic design which Saarinen was quite fond of and often re-worked into his designs.Modernity collects and sells furniture, ceramics, glass, lighting, and jewelry by leading designers. The galleries collection comprises works by Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl, Arne Jacobsen, and Alvar Aalto among others.
