Alphabet, which owns Google, will be constructing “Sidewalk Toronto”, a new city on Toronto’s eastern waterfront, incorporating high-tech features that will set the trend for upcoming urban advancements. It has been conceptualized by Sidewalk Labs, a subsidiary of Alphabet. Waterfront Toronto sent out a request for a partner who would help give a new lease of life to Toronto’s Downtown area. Stretching over 800 acres, the area lies on the borders of Lake Ontario.Sidewalk Labs and Waterfront Toronto envision a locality that will employ futuristic systems to deal with a range of problems like the scarcity of affordable housing, excessive traffic and issues with safety and sustainability. It is hoped that digital infrastructure can create a link between the various areas in the district, while also providing all residents with Internet connectivity and a way of collating information on the environs, notes Dezeen.Sidewalk Toronto will also comprise a grid of self-driven vehicles and digital steering instruments that seek to enhance the safety and efficiency of all kinds of transport. Health services and community support programs will be supported by data and offer easy access to the residents. The cost of houses and retail spaces will be brought down using innovative ways of construction. They will also incorporate fixtures that help lower the consumption of energy. Public spaces can stay open throughout the year thanks to infrastructure tailored to various types of weather, allowing citizens to easily access the beaches, waterfront and gardens.Sidewalk Labs and Waterfront Toronto hope that all these ventures will inspire companies that share their vision to set up base in the new district and promote it as a center for technology. For a start, Alphabet will be shifting Google Canada to Sidewalk Toronto. Sidewalk Labs has ploughed $50 million USD into the first stage of the project, and they will also invite suggestions from the local community. Federal, provincial, and municipal governments have also contributed $1.25 billion CAD towards building infrastructure to secure the district against floods.Click here to view the slideshow. Read more
