Demisch Danant will be opening its doors to a new exhibition, titled “I AM I,” this week featuring beautiful ceramic designs by Belgian artist and designer Jos Devriendt. In his first solo show in New York, Devriendt will be presenting 90 unique works including vessels, lamps, and other objects. The designer has been exploring European design since the 1950s. For past two decades, he has been experimenting with the form of a mushroom, which serves as the model for his functional sculptures. In his ongoing series “Night and Day,” Devriendt has created mushroom-like lamps in delicate porcelain, which are illuminated by natural light during the day and electrically at the night time. Each piece is unique, with its color as well as the perception of its form changing according to time and space. The artist-designer says that he tries to “reshape the form from day to night, solely with light: the daylight, which shines upon the sculpture and the artificial light, which comes from within and erases the material form.”The exhibition will also present a collection of vases, which are designed to sit empty, along with small minimalist sculptural objects that evoke visual, emotional, and intellectual conditions.Jos Devriendt was born in 1964. His works can be placed in late-surrealism.“I AM I” will be on view from October 26 to December 16, 2017, at Demisch Danant, 30 West, 12th Street, New York, NY 10011.For more details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/demisch-danant/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
