The American coffee joint Starbucks opened a café in one of the most picturesque locations in Kyoto earlier this year on June 30, 2017.The café is located in the Higashiyama district which is an important historical site of Kyoto. The Japanese teahouse on Ninenzaka near Kiyomizudera Temple has been transformed to build the café. Starbucks had to face a lot of criticism from the localites and naturalists who were sceptical about such a set up in the traditional atmosphere. But a visit to the café transports one to the Meiji era.WTKR notes that traditional Japanese design has been used to embellish the café in order to attract the local crowd. The entrance of the wooden structure has a dark blue Japanese noren on which the logo of the company is printed on either side. The ground floor features a bar made out of warm wood while the windows open into the garden outside. The visitors need to remove their shoes much like the ancient tree-houses that existed in the region and the seating arrangement is zabuton seating cushions placed on tatami mat floors. The café will be another feather in the cap of Starbucks Japan that is widely known for the aesthetically pleasing centers like the store on the banks of Kamogawa River.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek into the café.
