The National Academy Museum, New York selects leading artists and architects every year to serve as the ambassadors for arts in America. The tradition dates back to 1825 when the academy was founded and is one of the highest honors in American art and architecture. This year five renowned architects – Craig Dykers from Snøhetta, David Lake and Ted Flato from Lake Flato, and Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa from SANAA - have been invited to join the National Academy’s Class of 2017. The selected architects will serve as a faculty at the National Academy School. They will also be invited to exhibit their works at the National Academy Museum and create a signature work for the academy’s collection. The academy houses one of the most treasured collections of American art and architecture with close to 8,000 works spanning its nearly 200-year history. The collection features works dating back to Hudson River School and the early 19th century along with the contemporary and digital-age works.Dykers is a Founding Partner of Snøhetta with leading projects to his credit including the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion, New York. He is currently leading the expansion of San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the reconstruction of the new Times Square in New York. David Lake and Ted Flato cofounded Lake Flato in 1984. Lake’s significant projects include the new Austin Central Library, Georgia Tech Engineering Biosystems Building, and the Pearl Brewery Redevelopment in Texas. Flato is currently leading the development of the new Midtown Arts and Theater Center in Texas, and the Naples Botanical Garden Visitor Center in Florida, among other projects. Pritzker prize winner Japanese architect Kazuyo Sejima is known for her modernist designs built in marble, glass, and metals featured in notable buildings like the New Museum in New York, the Rolex Learning Center, and the Glass Pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art. She is accompanied by Ryue Nishizawa as the co-founder at SANAA.
