London’s housing crisis may have a unique solution with the “Shed Project” conceived by London-based design studio Studio Bark and housing company Lowe Guardians. The project plays upon the contradiction of soaring rent rates and numerous office and factory buildings that are lying empty in London. The small sheds are assembled in such abandoned spaces and offer compact but cozy living spaces in their corridors. The best part is their affordability – a rent of just 300 euros per month, after an initial 6000 Euros towards production cost. The materials used are all light-weight such as plywood, lambswool and recycled polyester; so setting up the shed happens over a single day with just a hammer and drill, notes AD Magazin. The sheds comprise of prefabricated modules that can be put together in various sizes – even as small as 11 sq m. The micro-apartments are a study in the efficient use of space, with pieces of multifunctional furniture such as a ladder that is both a desk and shelf and a shelter that houses the sleeping areas. Opaque plastic is used to make the windows and doors, offering privacy as well as sufficient light. The only drawback is that there is no kitchen or bath but these wouldn’t have been possible to incorporate in such easy-to-assemble houses. The developers have chosen locations which already have washrooms to ensure the comfort of the tenants. At present, the sheds are meant as short-term options but Lowe Guardians hopes that they result in a long-term solution to the problem of homelessness.Click here to view the slideshow. Read more
