Idris Khan’s design for Wahat Al Karmara in Abu Dhabi has won the 2017 American Architecture Prize.Wahat Al Karama, which translates as ‘the Oasis of Dignity,’ has been built in memory of UAE military personnel who lost their lives serving the country. London-based artist Idris Khan conceptualized the leaning tablets as symbolic of the pillar of support provided by soldiers, their families and citizens who were part of the UAE’s military. The façades of the 31 tablets are covered with aluminum panels with some parts sandblasted and inscribed with poems composed by emirs. The Pavilion of Honor is built with recycled aluminum extracted from military vehicles. The walls list the names of personnel who died serving the military. A unique coming together of art, architecture and poetry, the monument holds a national significance as the place for reflection and remembrance.Idris Khan wanted to “create a park for reflection on both loss and remembrance, a spiritual place that conveyed unity and support. I wanted this monument to have positive and hopeful resonance while inspiring curiosity in sculpture and how contemporary art can influence emotions.”The project was completed with the collaborative efforts of Urban Arts Projects, bureau^proberts, AECOM, and Robert Bird Group. For more details, visit: http://www.uapcompany.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the project.
