OMA’s Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu have been chosen as the architects for the New Museum’s next phase of expansion. This project will be OMA’s debut public building in the city of New York. The new building will provide an additional 50,000 sq. ft. of space — almost doubling the museum’s footprint in Bowery — for more number of galleries, easy movement, and creating more fluid space for new platforms and programs. The new structure will be designed to complement the museum’s SANAA building, which is a critically acclaimed and iconic work of architecture.New Museum is the New York city’s only museum dedicated exclusively to contemporary art. The museum’s groundbreaking curatorial exhibitions and programs attract more than 400,000 visitors annually, underlining this place as a leading international arts and culture destination. The museum has also been taking several scholarly initiatives and providing innovative platforms for cross-disciplinary experimentation between urbanism, technology, and art. The expansion project will accommodate the museum’s increasing platter of programs as well as the audience.Lisa Phillips, a member of The New Museum Board of Trustees, said, “OMA is a great choice for our next building. Koolhaas has thought deeply about the identity and landscape of our city going back to his landmark book ‘Delirious New York,’ published in 1978, a year after the Museum’s founding.”Shohei Shigematsu, a Partner at OMA, says he is “thrilled to work with an institution that deeply values the practices of creative forward-thinkers. As a Japanese architect, I am very happy to engage in a unique dialogue with SANAA and build alongside one of their seminal works.”Founded by Rem Koolhaas, OMA New York has designed notable projects including the Prada New York Epicenter, Central Library, Milstein Hall at Cornell University, and the IIT Campus Center. Shohei Shigematsu has earlier led the extension of the National Art Museum of Quebec, and the Albright Knox Gallery in Buffalo, New York. For more details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide-venues/285519/museum-overview Read more
