Chicago is abuzz with architecture-related events and exhibitions interspersed all through the city as part of Chicago Architecture Biennial which took off last month and runs through January 2018. This year’s special projects at the biennial include a collaboration between SO-IL and Ana Prvacki, an installation at Garfield Park Conservatory by Francois Perrin, performances by Gerard & Kelly, and more. The specially commissioned projects are located in different parts of Chicago, activating the whole city with architectural celebrations, while the Chicago Architecture Center remains the epicenter. Francois Perrin’s “Air Houses: Design for a New Climate” is an architectural experiment that draws inspiration from vernacular traditions to propose buildings that are not disengaged from their contexts and are built in response to nature. The installation is housed in the Garfield Park Conservatory. SO-IL and Ana Prvacki create wearable enclosures using air-filtering meshes allowing the musicians who wear them to play instruments, sing and dance while breathing freely. Titled “L’air pour l’air,” this performance-based interaction questions the impact of progress on the well-being of our cities. The Farnsworth House plays host to Gerard & Kelly’s “Modern Living,” exploring how intimacy and domestic space are contained within modern architecture through videos and a series of performances. James Welling’s multi-exposure images of Illinois Institute of Technology and Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive Apartments invite new readings of Mies van der Rohe’s buildings. The special projects will be on display in different parts of Chicago through January 7, 2018.For more details, visit: http://chicagoarchitecturebiennial.org/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the projects.
