Emma and Georgina Bloomberg Center, the academic hub of the new Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island, opened last month. The center has been designed as a net-zero building, pioneering new standards in environmental sustainability through state-of-the-art design by New York’s Morphosis Architects. The project was led by Morphosis’ Pritzker Prize-winning founder Thom Mayne and principal Ung-Joo Scott Lee.The four-storey building is spread over 160,000-square-feet and is named in honor of Emma and Georgina Bloomberg who gifted US$ 100 million to Michael Bloomberg, New York’s 108th Mayor who was responsible for bringing Cornell Tech to the city. Set beneath a photovoltaic canopy, Bloomberg Center’s low and narrow profile frames stunning views of the island. The facade is optimized to balance transparency, maximize insulation, and reduce thermal bridging. The building is among the largest net-zero energy academic buildings and aims to reach LEED Platinum status. Primary power is generated onsite with a 40,000-square-feet canopy supporting 1,465 photovoltaic panels, which converge engineering requirements and architecture to generate solar power as well as decrease cooling loads by providing shade to the building. Prominent sustainable features include a low-maintenance green roof to keep the surface cool; smart building technology for on-demand power and responding to user occupancy; highly-insulated facade; 80 geothermal wells; and a 40,000-gallon rainwater-harvesting tank. Bloomberg Center is phase one of the new campus, which also includes The Bridge and The House. For more details, visit: www.morphosis.com/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the project.
