The exhibition titled “Furnification” featuring works of Dutch artist and sculptor Joep van Lieshout is on view at Carpenters Workshop Gallery, Paris. The show features the artist’s new experiments to create a new material language. The selection of works on display is part of what Lieshout terms as CryptoFururism. He uses his art to distinguish between utopia and destruction. With this series, the artist sets out to destroy the process, renew and create again, all in all to hit the reset button. The exhibit contains industrial artworks such as hammers, presses, shredders, and rollers that clearly reflect Lieshout’s fascination with the relationship that man shares with machines, the environment, the consumerist society and systems that he currently inhabits. The machines are rightfully sculptures in their own way with an aim to recycle, be it scrap, consumer goods, or even artworks.Joep van Lieshout (b. 1963) is a Dutch artist and sculptor. In 1995, he founded Atelier Van Lieshout. He studied at Academy of Modern Art in Rotterdam, Ateliers ’63 based in Haarlem, and Villa Arson in Nice, France. In the last two decades, Lieshout has created a range of works that combine art, design, and architecture. He is also known for creating large-scale, freestanding structures, for example, the Wombhouse (2004). Lieshout has received numerous awards including Charlotte Köhler Award (1991), Prix de Rome Award (1992), Hendrik Chabot Award (1997), Kurt Schwitters Award (2004), and Stankowski Award (2009), among others.“Furnification” runs through September 30, 2017 at Carpenters Workshop Gallery, 54 Rue De La Verrerie – 75004, Paris, France. For details, visit: http://carpentersworkshopgallery.com/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
