The exhibition titled “Architectural Pavilions: Experiments and Artifacts” is currently on view at Museum of Craft and Design, San Francisco. The show features the presentation of digital and handmade pavilions by seven architectural studios. It focuses on architecture’s physical and collaborative processes through an immersive architectural environment for a period of six months. The exhibition showcases contemporary pavilion projects through a site-specific, full-scale installation alongside material samples, small-scale models, and digital renderings that reflect a broad range of techniques that architects employ to build pavilions at different scales. The exhibit will also contain site-specific installations by Jay Nelson and Iwamoto Scott (with the assistance of Lisa Iwamoto’s architecture students from UC Berkeley). Each participating studio identifies pavilions as an opportunity to explore a wide variety of ideas and design strategies that would be more challenging to propose and pursue with permanent structures. Pavilions present a low-risk, experimentation space with design skills. “Architectural Pavilions: Experiments and Artifacts” look at the pavilions as cross-disciplinary collaborations that encourage advancement of architecture into new terrains including research, artistic authorship, new building technologies, education, and curatorial practice. The seven architectural studios that are featured in the show include Carmody Groarke (London); Do/Su Studio Architecture (Los Angeles); IwamotoScott (San Francisco); Jay Nelson (San Francisco); Materials & Applications (Los Angeles); SITU Studio (New York); and Warren Techentin Architecture (Los Angeles). The Museum of Craft and Design (MCD) in San Francisco was founded in 2004.
