The selection of works on display challenges traditional usage methods and explores new and innovative techniques. Thus, considerably blurring the lines between art, craft, and design ‘Cranbrook: A New Domestic Landscape’ features graduates from various departments of Academy of Art such as 3D Design, Architecture, Ceramics, and Metalsmithing. Detroit-based Chris Schanck (3D Design ’11) uses steel, foam and metallic foil to create pieces at the Dior boutique and Tom Ford flagship stores in New York. Vivian Beer (Metals ’04), a 2017 United States Artists Fellow and the winner of Ellen’s Design Challenge uses materials like bronze, stainless steel, concrete and automotive paint to combine decorative arts with industrial design.Cranbrook Academy of Art has for a long time been a hotbed of experimental design. It has played an important role in visualizing artifacts for living from the handcrafted production of the Arts and Crafts period to the furniture movement of the 1980s. Known as the cradle of American modernism, the academy still continues to have a significant impact on the world of art, architecture, and design. “Cranbrook: A New Domestic Landscape” runs from May 12, 2017, through January 14, 2018, at Cranbrook Art Museum, 39221 Woodward Ave, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48303, USA.For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide-venues/286915/museum-overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
