The Galerie Marcilhac is certainly the oldest Parisian gallery devoted to the Decorative Arts of the 20th century. Under the direction of Félix-Félix Marcilhac, the gallery presents unique works from the 1920’s to the 1940’s. The gallery organizes exhibitions devoted to the great figures of Art Déco that uphold its respected reputation. Works by famous decorators such as Jean-Michel Frank, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, Eugène Printz, Marcel Coard, Jean Dunand, Louis Süe et André Mare or Joseph Csaky, are shown alongside works by more contemporary artists like Alberto and Diego Giacometti. In this fair the gallery will present work by Eugène Printz, Joseph Csaky, André Groult among others. Eugène Printz, who was born in Paris in 1889, didn’t receive a specialized training. He learnt all his job’s secrets as a cabinetmaker by making copies of old furniture in his father’s workshop, in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. From 1920, he began research in modern furniture. At the “International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts”, in 1925, he exhibited his first personal and autonomous works, along with Pierre Chareau. Joseph Csaky was born in 1888 into a modest family of Szeged, in the South of Hungary. After a period of poverty and instability, the artist decided to come in Paris in 1908 where he first lived, for a short time, in the Cité Falguière before he briefly settled in ‘la Ruche’ in 1909. From 1927, Joseph Csaky gave a new inflexion to his work; he partially abandoned the abstract streak to turn to a more literal figuration, while the subjects he favored also evolved, the animals and the feminine figures becoming his favorite ones. The shapes became rounder and more voluptuous, the angles softer, facing an increasing sensuality. André Groult was born into a very conventional family. However he was never conditioned by it. Inescapable figure of the XXth Century Decorative Arts, he lauded his creations with sensuality, freshness and fantasy whilst embracing some of the codes of furniture Louis Philippe and Restauration. For the “International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts” in 1925, he conceived a lady bedroom in a harmony of pink and gray, brocaded silk tensioned across the walls which became talk of the town. This fair will open from September 11 through September 17, 2017 at Grand Palais - Paris, Stand N18.For details, visit: www.biennale-paris.com and marcilhacgalerie.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibit.
