British sculptor Alex Chinneck has unveiled his first-ever permanent work “Six Pins and Half a Dozen Needles” at Assembly London, a multi-purpose campus in the city’s Hammersmith neighborhood. The whimsy and the illusory frequently make an appearance in Chinneck’s work and this one is no different.Chinneck has used 4000 bespoke bricks and over 1000 stainless steel components to build a wall that reaches 20-metres high and is split into two, intended to resemble a page torn in half. Rather like an urban illusion, the artwork is a combination of artistic, architectural and engineering prowess. “Six Pins and Half a Dozen Needles Assembly London” was commissioned by AXA Investment Managers for Assembly London and took 14 months to be built. It is interesting to note that a major part of the building presented the same ratios to an A4 sheet of paper, thus making it the ideal site for the project. Reportedly, obtaining planning permission for the project was a major obstacle since the project would be in the public realm. Given the scale of the project, it involved significant contribution from the construction sector with regards to drainage and insulation. The title “Six Pins and Half a Dozen Needles” implies something that was torn and needed to be put back together. The project exhibits a cartoon-like quality, which the artist hopes, will prove engaging to the public.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the show. Read more
