“Making Heimat. Germany, Arrival Country” is an exhibition of works on view at Deutsches Architekturmuseum, Frankfurt. The exhibition is in response to the arrival of over a million refugees in Germany during 2015 and 2016.The need for temporary accommodation is scarce and urgent. What is also urgent is the need for new ideas and reliable approaches to integration. Eight theses on the Arrival City were developed in close collaboration with Doug Saunders, author of Arrival City: How the Largest Migration in History Is Reshaping Our World. The current situation and the demands made on an Arrival City converge on one crucial point the housing crisis in Germany and the want for concrete solutions regarding low-cost housing issues. Heimat is a German concept that doesn’t translate easily into other languages. It cannot be termed as homeland according to the English language nor casa like the Spanish. The title “Making Heimat”, a bilingual coinage, introduces a new, active dimension into the discussion and asks as to how is Heimat “made and by whom.In 2015, the German border was kept open, allowing nearly 900,000 refugees to enter, but in the first eleven months of 2016, only approximately 300,000 individuals seeking shelter in Germany arrived.Despite the ebb in the flow of people, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees is still fully occupied with processing the asylum applications from 2015 and 2016, which means that 300,000 refugees continue to live in initial reception centers and collective accommodation, while the need for affordable housing in Germany’s metropolitan areas becomes ever more pressing.“Making Heimat. Germany, Arrival Country” runs from March 4 through September 10, 2017, at Deutsches Architekturmuseum, Schaumainkai 43, 60596 Frankfurt am Main, GermanyFor details, visit: www.dam-online.deClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
