“Futures Found: The Real and Imagined Cityscapes of Post-war Britain,” an exhibition of imagery from public spaces, is on view at the Royal Academy of Arts, London through May 29, 2017. The exhibition, part of “Lost Futures: Futures Found”, which is also a part of the London Festival of Architecture 2017, explores the parallel and often conflicting narratives that have been developed around a selection of post-war projects. Including references and material drawn from film, music, literature and art, along with the experiences of residents and social activism, the display collectively challenges the perceived sense of failure of these projects and demonstrate a wider and more nuanced view of what this architecture has created and inspired. The display includes visual documentations of early social housing in the Narkomfin building in Moscow and the developments of post-war housing estates such as Park Hill in Sheffield, also exploring the heavily contested fate of the Aylesbury Estate in London, juxtaposing it with the completely different architectural approach of the Brandon Estate. From investigations into the changing attitudes to public space in post-war housing estates, to the demise and subsequent revival of St Peter’s Seminary in Cardross, the exhibition represent a gamut of different examples of post-war architecture, evoking the discussion about post-war architecture beyond the aspect of its solely aesthetic appreciation. The exhibition is on view at Royal Academy of Arts, Burlington House, Piccadilly, Mayfair, London W1J 0BD, UK.For details, visit: www.royalacademy.org.ukClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
