Berlin is surrounded by beautiful lakes, most of them easy to reach even via public transport and great for a “day in the countryside” if the city is getting a little too stressful. Here’s three ideas:WannseeWannsee, or more correctly Greater Wannsee, is legendary for many reasons. Located in the southwest of Berlin, in the classy Steglitz-Zehlendorf district with its grand mansions and villas, it hosts Berlin’s oldest and Europe’s largest lakeside lido with a sandy beach covering more than one kilometer. Opened over 100 years ago, the lakeside ensemble today is a protected cultural heritage site – and still very much in use. Wannsee has been Berlin’s most popular free time go-to destination for decades. In the 1950s it even inspired a now classic German “Schlager” popsong. There’s retro-style roofed wicker beach chairs, a park, a playground, showers, cafés, shops and a separate section for nudists. If you don’t feel like swimming, go for a walk or a boat ride. With around 350,000 square meters in total, the premises offer enough space for everyone to find a quiet place.Address: Wannseebadweg 25, 14129 BerlinLiepnitzseeDuring the Cold War Liepnitzsee, located to the north of Berlin, was a preferred swimming spot for high ranking officials of the communist SED party. Today everybody is free to enjoy the amazingly clear water or take a short boat ride to Werder Island(Großer Werder), a gorgeous place for hiking, picnics, relaxing or swimming (there’s a designated beach area).Address: Am Liepnitzsee 1, 16348 WandlitzKrumme Lanke & SchlachtenseeTwo lakes to go to if you want to get out of town spontaneously: just take the U3 underground line all the way to its final destination Krumme Lanke or the S1 to Schlachtensee and you’re there. Both lakes are beautiful, ideal for swimming, with many nice spots and enough room to enjoy a little privacy if preferred.
