Democrats on Capitol Hill are sounding bullish on coming to agreement by the end of the week on a possible framework for a reconciliation bill encompassing the shreds of President Joe Biden’s economic, family, and climate plans. That package has been whittled down from the $6 trillion initially put forward by Budget Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders to $3.5 trillion agreed upon by everybody to somewhere just under $2 trillion after Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, along with the House Sabotage Squad, decided to disagree. The new optimism might be the result of a decision by Biden and congressional leadership to cut Sinema out of the loop and isolate her. That has been reported by just one outlet, Punchbowl News, but it tracks. Manchin has been a pain in the ass, but he has at least been willing to talk to fellow members, including Sanders, and to Biden. Sinema “is still very much a work in progress, and depending on the day we don’t know what the work entails,” one Democrat involved in the negotiations told CNN. Given how much the package has shrunk, the fight now is over the crumbs. This week, Biden informed Democrats that two years of free community college is entirely out. Other programs are an unknown as of yet. For example, Biden has discussed replacing the expansion of Medicare with dental, vision, and hearing benefits to sending out an $800 debit card to Medicare enrollees to cover dental expenses. He’s talked about reducing the duration of the child tax credit expansion—which has cut child poverty almost in half this year—from four years to just one. Read more
