In a statement released on Monday evening, the Carter Center announced that President Jimmy Carter had been hospitalized and will be undergoing surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. The pressure is caused by bleeding following recent falls. In early October, President Carter suffered a fall that left him with bruises and stitches on his face—and then went right back out to help build a house for someone who needs it, as he has done thousands of times before. But a week later, Carter took another fall that left him with a fractured pelvis. It also seems that one or both of the falls caused other damage. Carter is at Emory University Hospital and is reported to be resting comfortably. His wife, Rosalynn, is with him. In 2015, Carter was diagnosed with brain cancer, but recovered following treatment. He previously broke his hip in May, and had returned to the work he loves only a short time before the falls in October. At 95, President Carter is the oldest former president in U. S. history.
