On view through October 27, 2019, at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is “Alexander Girard: A Designer’s Universe,” a traveling exhibition organized by the Vitra Design Museum.Considered to be one of the most influential interior and textile designers of the 20th century, the exhibition is the first major retrospective on Girard’s work. It opens “a door to his creative universe and shows his close relationships with contemporaries such as Charles & Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Andy Warhol, Rudi Gernreich, and many others,” the museum informs. On display are Girard’s designs in textiles, furniture, and sculptures along with numerous sketches, drawings, and collages that have not been exhibited before.A pivotal figure in the history of the Museum of International Folk Art, Girard donated more than 100,000 objects from his and his wife Susan’s folk art collection and in 1981, creating the museum’s long-term exhibition “Multiple Visions.” A passion for colors, ornamentation, and inspirations from folk art were different aspects of Girard’s playful designs.“The exhibition and public programs will illuminate the relationship of folk art to Modernism and design,” said Khristaan Villela, Director of MOIFA. “Georgia O’Keeffe and Alexander Girard were great friends and shared the spare, modernist aesthetic which defined their respective practices.”In conjunction with the Girard exhibition in MOIFA, Santa Fe’s Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) and Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA) explore the “the concept and practice of design from three unique perspectives: Girard’s impact on the American aesthetic; his imprint on Santa Fe; and the dynamic field of Native design centered in Santa Fe,” the museum adds. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is hosting programs designed to celebrate the institution’s association with the designer. It highlights the relationship and influences of two of last century’s most well-known icons in the world of art and design. At IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, the exhibition “Action/Abstraction Redefined,” is open through July 7, 2019, and features artworks that challenges the stereotypical expectations of what Indian art should be by experimenting with American Modern art movements such as Abstract Expressionism, and combining them with influences from their own art traditions.“Alexander Girard: A Designer’s Universe” is on view through October 27, 2019, at the Museum of International Folk Art, On Museum Hill, 706 Camino Lejo, Santa Fe, NM 87505, USA.For details, visit: https://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide-venues/287083/museum-overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
