Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), 1991, during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, regarding the sexual harassment claims made by Anita Hill: «When they heard about this the first time, they immediately ordered this FBI investigation, which was the very right thing to do. It was the appropriate thing to do. They did what every other chairman and ranking member have done in the past. And the investigation was done and it was a good investigation.» Hatch now, when Dr. Christine Blasey Ford has made credible sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanugh: At this point, we don't know whether the hearing will go forward. Democrats and Ford are demanding that certain preconditions be met. In particular, Ford's legal team said in a letter to Grassley that they want an FBI investigation to take place before Ford testifies. But as the Justice Department stated earlier this week, the allegations do not involve any potential crime over which the FBI would have jurisdiction, and it is not the role of the FBI during background investigations to judge the credibility of accusations. Rather, the FBI's role is to evaluate whether a nominee could pose a national security risk. Except what the Justice Department actually said is that they would reopen the vetting of Kavanaugh if the president directed them to. Hatch has an excuse, a truly ridiculous and pulled out of thin air excuse, or other places, for this new supposed role for the FBI: «Hill was a federal employee alleging misconduct by a superior on federal property. There was a clear federal nexus. No such nexus exists here.» Does that sound like utter bullshit? It is utter bullshit. If that was actually a thing, that the FBI could only investigate stuff that happened on federal property, the FBI wouldn't be getting much done. But it's pretty fucking discouraging that in 27 years, the Republican party has actually devolved. That those old white men are so blatantly, so insultingly hostile to women when a quarter century ago they at least thought they had to pretend otherwise.
