One more way the GOP tax law is screwing people over: reducing the growth of affordable housing

Most Americans knew that the Republican tax plan would be bad for us. That’s why we overwhelmingly did not support it. Yet, here we are in 2018 with a law that overhauls taxes in order to reduce taxes for the wealthy and for corporations while taxing the poor and middle class the hardest. That is most certainly not making America great—unless you have millions of dollars. Still, it gets worse. This law also means that the development of affordable housing will be impacted. And in a nation where homelessness is on the rise because rents are now sky-high, that isn’t exactly good news.  The last time that Congress approved a sweeping overhaul of the federal tax code, in 1986, it created a tax credit meant to encourage the private sector to invest in affordable housing. It has grown into a $9 billion-a-year social program that has funded the construction of some three million apartments for low-income residents. But the Republican tax plan approved last month amounts to a vast cutback, making it much less likely that such construction will continue apace. Because the tax rate for corporations has been lowered, the value of the credits — which corporations get in return for their investments — is also lower. [...] It works like this: State governments award credits to affordable-housing developers, who transfer them to corporations in exchange for equity in rental buildings whose units are set aside for low-income tenants. Corporations use the credits as a coupon against future taxes. Low-income housing tax credits are particularly popular among banks because affordable-housing investments help satisfy their obligations under the Community Reinvestment Act. Thanks to the incredible greed of the Republicans, corporations now have no incentive to develop subsidized housing for people who desperately need it. That should be shocking. It would be in a lot of countries. But after all, this is America. And since our national culture is one in which people are so obsessed with wealth, fame. and getting as many material possessions as you can, it shouldn’t surprise us that conservative lawmakers and corporations are unconcerned with passing laws that will force people to live on the streets.

Border patrol agents are destroying lifesaving jugs of water left for migrants in the desert

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents are trying to kill migrants crossing the U.S./Mexico border. There’s no other conclusion to draw from a video, released by humanitarian group No More Deaths, of border patrol officers tampering with and destroying jugs of water left for border crossers in the desert. From 2001 to 2014, at least 2,100 migrants died of exposure in the searing desert heat, where temperatures can go anywhere from 110 degrees and up. Over the years, as humanitarian workers have placed tens of thousands of one-gallon jugs along this area to save lives, workers have also reported that jugs have been routinely destroyed and tampered with by human hands. While racist border vigilante extremists have eagerly confessed to some of the destruction, human rights groups have long suspected border patrol agents of being participants as well. Now, No More Deaths and La Coalición de Derechos Humanos have released a report and footage confirming it: The report … said wildlife—as well as hunters, hikers and border militia members —also damaged aid drops. But it said the main culprits were agents from border patrol, a branch of Customs and Border Protection, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security. “The practice of destruction of and interference with aid is not the deviant behavior of a few rogue border patrol agents, it is a systemic feature of enforcement practices in the borderlands.” Steve Passament, a border patrol spokesman in the Tucson sector, said the agency did not condone the destruction of or tampering with water or food caches. “We don’t want to see anyone out there die. We have to do our enforcement job and we do it as humanely as possible. We want to save lives.” Except Border Patrol allegedly violated an Obama-era agreement in order to raid No More Death’s lifesaving medical camp along the border last summer, arresting a number of immigrants in a sweep that resembled a war movie. The organization said “30 armed agents entered camp with at least 15 trucks, 2 quads and helicopter to apprehend four patients receiving care.”

Trump strives for peak hypocrisy talking about love, life and family to anti-abortion crowd

Aside from a brief digression into the economy, it was for the most part Teleprompter Trump, all “beautiful cause” and “movement born out of love” as descriptions of a movement to prevent women from exercising control over their own bodies. “You love every child, born and unborn,” said the man whose immigration agents followed an ambulance to the hospital and took a 10-year-old with cerebral palsy into custody following surgery. “You believe that every life is sacred,” said the man who has repeatedly threatened nuclear war with North Korea. “Americans are more and more pro-life, you see that all the time,” he said. In fact, according to the Pew Research Center, “public support for legal abortion remains as high as it has been in two decades of polling.” “We are protecting the sanctity of life and the family as the foundation of society,” said the man who had an affair with an adult film actress while married and shortly after his youngest son was born. Teleprompter Trump, in other words, is just about as full of BS as Off-the-Cuff Trump.

The newest work by German artist Katharina Grosse encompasses an entire warehouse, transforming its raw interior into a soft maze of kaleidoscopic color. The installation, titled The Horse Trotted Another Couple of Metres, Then it Stopped, responds to the architecture of Sydney’s contemporary art center Carriageworks, filling the industrial space with nearly 90,000 square feet of painted fabric. “I was fascinated by the thought of folding space,” explained Katharina Grosse in a statement about the work. Report: Indians, Orioles had discussed Manny Machado trade

There’s no real movement on the Manny Machado trade front, but that doesn’t mean teams haven’t been trying.According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the Cleveland Indians held trade discussions with the Baltimore Orioles about Machado last month. There are no ongoing discussions now, but there is reason to believe the two sides could match up well if the Orioles really do want to move Machado. The Indians have a surplus of starting pitchers, a Baltimore weakness. Morosi reports that there is a belief that the Indians are willing to trade starter Danny Salazar, who could be of interest to the Orioles. The Indians have reportedly not been the most persistent suitor for Machado, but they may match up the best. That said, there doesn’t seem to be any momentum toward a deal, and the Orioles don’t look as if they’re aggressively trying to move him. Instead, they appear to be waiting to see if anyone comes to them with an offer that blows them away.
